Anyone drive to DL from NorCal recently?

I'm curious as well. We are driving down late Weds night and coming back Sunday afternoon, I'm have always been more worried about Sunday but now think I should be more worried about Weds...uuuuuugh

Bumping this thread up to see if anyone else has updates on traffic driving from NorCal!

You can always check road conditions/delays here.

Yes, I know about that site but it's not detailed. it usually says something like "delays up to 3 hours" which isn't as helpful as real life experiences where posters share what day of the week and what time they were there.

I drove south on Wednesday August 31 at 5PM and north on Saturday September 3 at 6PM, there were no backups :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the info! We'll be heading down in a couple of weeks!

My fingers are crossed Caltrans (or whoever is contracted to do the work) will finish before the end of October 'deadline' or at least I'm hoping they will open up the parts that they took down to one lane as they finish. We had a terrible trip home one Sunday in August (it was in my mini trip report) and I'm worried for our early October trip down. It took us, if I remember correctly, @9 hours and some friends who were coming home from San Diego 11 hours...they stayed on I-5, they didn't get off and make their way to 99 like we did and as it turns out the 99 detour took us just as long as it would have if we had stayed in the I-5 traffic.

Keep us as updated as you can all of you 'North of Anaheim I-5 construction drivers' :thumbsup2

I drove to SF last Friday from the LA area, and took 5-99-46-5, and so added some time to my route. A friend of mine who was about an hour ahead of me took the 5 all the way, and said that even though he was behind a truck, the traffic wasn't bad at all - this was around 8am - and that I should have just stayed on the 5.

I ended up taking 5 home all the way yesterday morning, and had no trouble at all. That could have been because it was Labor Day, though, and less traffic at that time. (It was early morning)

Traffic updates while driving are on 1610 on the am dial.

Wanted to update this thread now that we're back. We drove down Thursday between 12 and 1 and stayed on the 5 all the way down. It added at most 5 minutes to our commute, as we slowed down to under 65 mph a few times in that one stretch near Button Willow.

On Sunday we drove up the 5 and hit that area around 10 and stopped for lunch in Button Willow. There were no delays at all.

Provided it stays the same, there's no need to take the detour!

We left the East Bay on Labor Day weekend on a Friday morning at 5am. No problems the whole way. We tried to not stop until after the construction. Then had breakfast. Coming home we left at 11am on Monday and we did have delays.

I'm curious how much of a delay the construction on I-5 is causing people. What time of day and day of the week did you travel?
