Houston Tx, to Orlando? How long did it take you to get to Orlando?

I'm trying to figure out how long our trip will take. Were leaving from Brownsville ,Tx to orlando. I know that it will take us 6 hrs to get to Houston, but don't know how long it should take us to get to Orlando.

I took out my Atlas and it states that from Brownsville to Orlando it would be 1322 miles. I divided it by 65 miles per hour (65 as an average) and it came to 20.33 hours(aprox. 22 hours). If this is correct then we should arrive in Orlando at 1:00 am on the 6th(check in day).

Just a side note. I want to stop and get a hotel room, stupid dh is insisting that he can drive straight thru. He said that if we can do this that we will have an extra day at the parks. I'm thinking that we will all be tooooo tired from the drive. Everything is up in the air for plans.

I live about 20 miles north of Houston and it takes us 10 hrs to get to Pensacola. From Pensacola, we take the scenic road and travel along the coast so we can stop and let the kids enjoy the beach. When we do this, there are some great areas that are kid friendly places to stop- Ft. Walton, Destin, Panama City. We usually stay at Panama City Beach for the night then get up and drive the remaining 6-7 hrs to WDW.

If traveling with children, I would suggest leaving Houston in the evening and trying to drive a portion of your trip at night. My kids watch movies for a few hours then sleep in the car. It then gives us a full day and night to recharge ourselves for WDW.

Crestview, Florida is where our friends spend the night. It's right along I-10, about one hour past Pensacola and a very quick and easy place to stop for the night.

This year my husband says we are flying. Haven't booked the flights yet- so, we'll see!

By the way, my DH was born and raised in Raymondville, not too far from where you are.

Mapquest.com or Mappoint.com will give you the mileage, time to get there and the all important turn by turn directions.

65 mph isn't a good rule of thumb. 50-55 mph is better--you need to allow for rest stops, traffic, construction, and roads with a 55 mph limit.

We just did this May 28th, and came home June 4th.

We have 3 kids....13, 9, and 6.

We left Spring, Tx (just North of Houston) at 6:00pm and drove straight through. We stopped only for gas. When we would stop for gas, everyone would use the potty and stretch their legs. We stopped when ever our tank was at the half way mark. We brought some snacks and drinks in a cooler and we went through the drive thru for a late breakfast/early lunch around 10:30am/11:00am. Arrived at the Boardwalk at 12:00pm Florida time. Total drive time, 17 hours. (Remember, Florida is one hour ahead of us.)

On June 4th, left at 10:30am. We stopped at a Waffle House for a late breakfast/early lunch. Did the drive thru for dinner. Did the same kind of deal as above, stopped for gas at tanks half way mark, potty, stretched, ect.... Arrived home at 1:00am Houston time. Total drive time, 15 hours.

This was our first time driving to Florida. I was DREADING the drive, but it wasn't that bad. We had the option of stopping for the night if it was needed. We were not on any kind of schedule.

A few thoughts:

1. For us it was MUCH easier to drive during the day. Even on the kids.

2. The drive is very boring. NOTHING to look at but trees.

3. The drive is an easy one. No red lights, stop signs, ect...just a straight shot.

Just a side note about the cost of gas. It cost us $87 each way and the price for gas averaged $2 a gallon. We drive a mini van. I was really surprised we only spent $174 total for gas.

Anyway, it was nice to have our own car while we were there, and not have to BE anywhere at a certain time. The kids did AWESOME on the trip. Played their Game Boys and watched TV. I would drive again.

Hope this helps.
