Anyone done solar?

We have solar, too. We went through Solar City. We went with a modified lease. We are locked in at a rate that is about 1/2 of what our electric company was charging us, and in 5 years we can buy the system out at the depreciated value. I was honestly too nervous to pay for the system flat out, so this was a good compromise. We could try it out, and if we like it we can buy it. If not, we just continue to pay the reduced rate until the contract is over and they just let us have it.

We have to pay the power company $5 a month to tie in to the system. Because we had to wait for permits, we had to wait several months to get the panels up. You want to make sure you get yourself in the lowest power tier, or zero out. If you make energy, the power company pays you almost nothing, so it's not worth buying panels that will make more than you will use.

We had outrageous power bills, but we also feel good about not using coal power for our electricity. So we decided to get solar both to save money, and for the environment. I always felt guilty if we left a light on, or if I was feeling lazy and used my electric dryer instead of hanging the laundry to dry. Now I use lights and watch TV and don't think twice about it. This ended up being a really great decision for us.
