Anyone concerned about the Coronavirus in WDW ?

Most people around here go away for spring break. My latest thinking is go enjoy vacation because everyone in town will be traveling all over and someone could bring it right into town from their travels. With so many people traveling to who knows where, we could be exposed without ever leaving here upon their return.
That same thinking can be applied to literally any communicable disease or virus. We live in a global society where anyone you come in contact with could have been on the other side of the world 24 hours ago.

I just read this morning it's simply going to go away, so no need to cancle any plans.

Where did you read that? Extreme Optimism Daily?

The most likely scenario, according to some renowned epidemiologists, is that this virus will become pervasive worldwide, and just be added to the flu as another Coronavirus we have to contend with every year. And yeah, computer simulation estimates are that most people will probably contract it eventually. This includes about 90 million Americans, 2 million of whom will die.

The "rather mild to most people" nature of it will allow it to spread far and wide, since people can be asymptomatic and spread it. It isn't as instantly lethal as SARS or H5N1 (avian flu), making it impossible to contain. People can have it and not know it. This makes is a very "successful" virus, biologically. It can spread and mutate stealthily.

This virus WILL end up here. It's just a matter of time. Some people think there are already hundreds of cases in the US, as of yet undiscovered because we haven't really been testing for it. That is changing as 5 major cities are now beginning to do so.

I live in NYC and I would honestly be shocked if it isn't already making its way around town undetected. But what exactly am I even supposed to do about that? I keep seeing the "it's coming, it's coming!" style coverage on social media and I can't even get myself worked up because literally, what am I supposed to to do about it?

Practice good hygiene habits. That's the extent of what any of us can do to protect ourselves.

The US is in no way prepared for a pandemic. If you're prone to worry about this type of stuff, *that* is what you should be freaking out about.

I agree that as a whole, the US is not prepared. However now is one of those times where I am very happy I live where I do, in an area with an absolutely massive health care presence. I feel for those Americans who live in poorly served rural areas.

I would make sure I was aware of the symptoms currently being reported. I would keep myself informed if there are any active known quarantines in your area more for a level of awareness.

In my metro for instance there are people under watch for the virus. The news lists them as a medium risk for the virus. The definition of medium is "either had close contact with an infected person, lived in the same household as someone infected, or traveled from mainland China outside the most worrisome providence, Hubei Province, where Wuhan is located."

They are in their homes being monitored. The Health Department however won't release if these people traveled from China or not. Presently these people do not have the virus but they are being monitored for the virus for 14 days with visits from the health department twice a day and these people are listed as being healthy. I live in the middle of the country for reference.

For me it's more about information. The more I have the more at ease I might be. The more information that comes about for this virus the better I can know for what to do to decrease my risks of getting it. We like the same type of things for other viruses and infections I see no reason why we shouldn't want the same information for this one.

One thing that bothers me was hearing today that the break out in South Korea is coming when the temperature is quite warm there. This virus may not be following the model of typical flu which fades out when the weather warms. I agree with washing hands, avoiding touching your face, and staying home if you are sick or immumocompromised. We don't have any booked travel reservations until December, and they are cancellable, but do have loose plans for May (driving) and July (flying), so nothing near term to think about. May just head to the beach.

I agree, I am actually shocked at this point that it hasn't hit NYC in large numbers. I'm guessing it isn't going to be too long before it does.
All you can do is what you would normally do to avoid any illness.

I really don't want to turn this thread into anything controversial. But someone who is in a position that - in the past - was looked to for leadership said it.

Oh wow. Except the person you are referring to didn’t just say it. It was repeated from another person in that position in China. Let’s get this all in context. No one that isn’t a medical professional is claiming to be one.

Regardless, it all depends on IF this virus shows to be one of the many seasonal viruses. But they are studying that very factor.

I was just reading about that. Well not Korea actually tropic areas. They referred to the fact that flu doesn’t act seasonally in those areas. But they did say there are more factors than just the weather but in the way people live or school calendars, etc that keep large groups from being inside smaller, closed in areas.

This is interesting. Might be slightly reassuring for the young and healthy, if we all get it and the majority survive, we will build immunity. I’m more concerned for my elderly parents and older folks in general. Also a bit worried personally since I tend to catch influenza easily even though I get flu shots, and it still is severe for me (pneumonia).

If it makes you feel better it isn’t warm there right now. The highest high in the next ten days is 53

This thread and the hysteria along with it. Far far exceeds any threat from the virus or any man made disaster. Reminds me of the twilight zone episode. The Shelter.
