Anyone concerned about the Coronavirus in WDW ?

I think the word "pandemic" is what is causing the hysteria. Pandemic does not mean "we're all gonna die." There's SO much we do not know about this illness yet, but the one thing that IS clear is that the VAST majority of people recover quite nicely from it AND some people "have it" without any symptoms whatsoever. Is it going to be bad for our medical system? Yup. Like a flu on steroids really. Is it going to disrupt the economy? Probably, but more a short term than long term effect. Is there anything *I* can do about it? Nope. Not in the medical field. I'll continue my normal flu season practice of washing my hands, etc, but that's all I can do. Am I going to get hysterical about it? Nope. Would do no good at all.

Well, the WHO and the CDC seem to be pretty darn concerned about this. If they weren't, we wouldn't even know about it.

People need to stop being so blase and comparing it to the flu.

It. Is. Not. The. Flu.

It is not behaving like the flu in ANY way.
There is a difference between being reasonable and logical about it and buying into the hype. Too many people are overreacting and unnecessarily fear mongering.

I mean, there is no need to panic and run out and clear the shelves at the supermarkets.

But also, acting like it's nothing to worry about is a very dangerous way of thinking as well.

Awareness, education, following issued guidance by the CDC...all prudent things to do.

Pandemic just means it's prevalent within a country or the world. Certainly, the virus is pandemic in China. Its not a worldwide pandemic YET, but very quickly approaching that as it is now in countries on almost every continent.

I've mentioned before my sister is an ID RN. She is more concerned with influenza than covid-19. I'll stick with the experts (WHO and CDC) on this one. 🙂

Finding the masks is all but impossible. Even on Amazon, the only sellers are very questionable.
True for surgical masks. N95 respirators however provide actual protection if used and fitted properly. Unfortunately it's the N95 masks that are all gone and being hoarded already.
If you aren’t being fit-tested they aren’t going to work right...

This is why there is a shortage of them for healthcare workers

She's in contact with the CDC multiple times a day. :) I'll panic when she does.

Again who is panicking? Being concerned and panicking are two very different things.

I think that is the most concerning (not panicking) about this. Some will be infected and not know it and could be spreading it unknowingly. Yes, for the vast majority of people it will be fine, but for the compromised it may not be.
Yes!! As an introvert, I’m actually getting a bit excited.

Everything shuts down? And we’re confined to our home?

Like just Netflix & PJs for who knows how long? When can this start?
Same!

My point was that the "death" rate being "touted" of 2% is based on people with KNOWN Covid-19. If there are many, many more people with the virus than are "known" the survival rate might, in fact, be vastly different. We've already heard that TESTING is not being done on lots of people. So, how in the world are they "calculating" this "death" rate? Based on what? If they've got the denominator wrong, the whole thing is wrong. I've heard some intelligent discussions about this from people who do this research, and that's what they are saying. But, it's not a "sound bite" that the media runs with.

Not only that, but if you had a 98% chance of winning the lottery, exactly how many tickets would you be buying? Me? Quite a few! LOL. I'm focused on the 98%! Not the 2% (if that's even the right number).

I am not going to WDW so I am not concerned with that. However, my husband leaves on Wednesday flying to Milan, Italy for a month. I am supposed to join him on March 12th. We are/were planning on visiting the area where the cases just broke out for a portion of the trip. There is someone with Coronavirus in a hospital in Milan.

While I am not afraid of catching it, I am concerned about the impact it will have on travel within Italy, closing of towns and restaurants, etc. Until two days ago, Italy only had two cases and no issues. I guess my point is who knows what will happen there in the next couple of weeks.

The good thing is we go to Italy regularly (about twice a year) so this will only be a temporary setback. I am not cancelling anything yet of course, but I wonder if there will soon be travel advisories, etc. Not to mention I want to go on my trip!

Hi- I came on this thread about my May WDW trip but I also have a "bucket list" trip to Italy planned for my 40th in June and I am getting increasingly worried!!! It seems like we might have to cancel... I am researching my options now.... so bummed.

I agree with the pp who said a week made a difference at the airport. Going down was fine. My time at wdw was fine. The flight home yesterday was not fine and I’m now scared. We flew mco to Toronto. There was a violently ill man on our flight—vomiting. Probably not related to covid 19, but I’m waiting for a call from air canada about what might be his serious illness.

Additionally, there were about a dozen Japanese passport holding passengers on my flight, all connecting internationally through Toronto, all masked. They sat far from me, but I’d be lying if I said I was not concerned these individuals were on my flight.

Upon arriving home, I’ve now stocked up on dry goods, meds, toiletries. We are booked for April and June as well. I’m not sure we are going. I’ll watch a few more weeks. I have to cancel by 31 days out. I’m pretty uncomfortable at this point though.

I was in Toronto last week until Saturday. I didn't see one person walking around with a mask. We were not at the Toronto airports, though.

While I am not trying to tell you to not be concerned, vomiting is not a symptom of Coronavirus. It is much more possible that this person had some stomach bug and it was peaking while on the flight. Heck, I am embarrassed to admin have serious motion sickness and have vomited on a plane (contained, but vomited).

In addition, certain segments of the Asian population wear masks while traveling long before this recent outbreak. I have plenty of pictures of them in backgrounds in my European travels.

Try to stay calm. To this point, this is not striking random, healthy people dead. Not saying it isn't concerning, just I think we need to remain calm.

On the other hand, how would you feel getting on a plane that had a 98% chance of arriving safely?
