Anyone cancelling WDW trip due to economy?

No plans to cancel our trip next summer. I bought the tickets just before the last price increase and I've locked in our offsite accommodations at a nice price. The main things to worry about are airfares and rental car rates, neither of which are really available yet. If those don't work out, we can always do the 1,000 mile drive...

Not cancelling here either. Life is too short. As bad as it sounds, we really do live for our Disney vacations. Its a week of family time and bonding for us that just doesn't happen the rest of the year. We leave in 3 weeks.

My family and I have been planning for MONTHS our first ever family WDW trip set for Thanksgiving. Because of the sudden huge economy scare, we are actually rethinking our decision to even go. My husband and I do have very secure careers but we have one in college and two coming up the ranks. We are very fiscally conservative and enjoy life that way. We have the vacation money set aside, but are thinking maybe we need to put it on hold til we see how the economy does and the ramifications of this whole mess.
Does anyone else feel the same way?

This is the main we bought into dvc. My dh has a pretty high stress job and he has to take a vacation now and then just to decompress. Now he's almost forced to.:rotfl:
I'd rather do without elsewhere than give up vacation.

AMEN!!!

We're not cancelling. On the contrary, we're hosting a family reunion for 22 people with our DVC membership. We'll be there for Thanksgiving week.

I do wonder, however, if DISsers are typical WDW guests. I tend to think we're more serious about these trips and manage to keep our plans more frequently than the "rest of the world."

I think for some people, it may come down to choosing between a Q4 vacation or Christmas.

We're not, either. Although I don't start booking until January, next year we're staying at Pop and not split staying. We'll also do the dining plan which will break us about even, maybe $20 ahead of OOP CS meals. And since we do park hop with aplomb I'll stick with hopper passes. Everything pretty much the same, except staying put at Pop.

We thought about canceling our Dec dh/I only trip and decided it just was not worth it. Our sanity comes first. Could we get by with something a little cheaper, probably. But we just don't want to. We did cancel an earlier trip this summer because we just were sure how things were going to go with the economy, but we have regretted missing the family time. We get little of it now that the kids are getting older.

Dh is the money man around here, I trust when he shows me what we have/don't have, when to tighten our belts etc. He is very good about money so I don't worry too much about things. He has a good job, works long hours and he should have a vacation he wants. Thankfully, its the kinda vacation I want too!

Cancel--no way for us. We are going on a trip (not Disney) and leaving in NINE days. I cant wait. Ive been about to go stir crazy since JULY. DW and I both have very secure jobs. We are both tenured teachers--she in special ed, me in secondary math--both in demand areas. While I would not go on a trip, or buy anything for that matter, that I could not afford, we can afford this trip, and my sanity requires it. By afford, I mean pay for without borrowing. I use credit cards, but I NEVER pay interest on them. The only debt I have is the mortgage. I also have a comfortable emergency fund. I am actually thinking of planning a Disney trip for 2009. I had thought it wouldnt work out until 2010.

No we just paid it off and all we have to pay for when we get there is food and souvenirs, but afraid to say it will most likely be a long long time before we can go back. Have to make the best out of this trip.

If you have the money set aside already, I'd absolutely go. You can't stimulate the economy by sitting at home with your money. I wouldn't go into debt to go or charge it, but if you have it already...GO! Have fun :)

I know how you feel. My dh works construction and I work in real estate. BOTH industries which have been hit hard by the economy. We had this trip planned for the last three years and about a year ago when we started making reservations and such we almost started to cancel because we weren't sure if it was a good idea but then we got a better than expected tax refund and then with the rebates we decided to use that money.

As this year has gone on and things have been tight we kept getting nervous about our decision but this will probably be our LAST trip for a very long time, unless the prices go back to normal, which I doubt they will. So we decided to just go with it. We can't get our airline money back, they would probably just give us credit on the flights and our hotel money is already paid as are our park tickets etc so at this point we would LOSE the money. So we are a go. And we are going at thanksgiving like you.

Sure it makes one nervous but this is a trip of a lifetime for us. We have been twice before but this may be the last trip for a LONG time so we want to make it a good one.

I say go and enjoy yourself if you already have the money set aside as it might be the last trip for awhile. ENJOY!

Never thought that I would say this but we might have to cancel our January trip. I just lost my job Monday so unless I can secure another one soon, it looks like the money just won't be there. :guilty:

I'm still going next month as its all paid for, but any future vacation plans are on hold.

I don't honestly care what the economy does, i will always do everything in my power (as long as we both have jobs) to continue my once a year trip.. We are booked for several upcoming trips (as you can see from my siggy) and i would scale back in other places to preserve those trips, to me, time spent with my family on these vacations are priceless.
I will do everything i can to continue this - reguardless if these wall street people can't get their acts together.

Tink - sorry to hear that -- hopefully you can find a new job soon.. sending pixie dust to you!

No we are not. My DH is getting ready to move away from us for a year and half so we need this time together before he goes. And we will book while we are there for next years. It's just something we do. Our only vacation besides visiting family.

If you are financially able to do it, than go!! Life is WAY too short not to. Obviously, if it's something you feel you will regret in the long run, it may not be worth it. Have a great time if you still decide to go :)

I'm so sorry :sad1: I hate hearing this. I hope you find another job soon!!!

Not going to cancel our trip in Nov or our cruise in May. I think that if you have the money you should go for it!
