So...has anyone thought of buying a scooter to help save on gas??????

My daughter and I just ordered scooters....took our motorcycle permit tests and passed....now waiting on them to be delivered....kind of excited and kind of scared. I have drove a scooter before but it has been a while.

I am looking forward to getting 90 miles to the gallon. Figured all the running I do it will help. Just little jonts through around town.

Was just wondering if anyone else had the same idea.

I LOVE scooters and I would have one in a heartbeat if we lived in town. We live too far out in the country and the roads are too narrow or dangerous (highways or no shoulders) to ride a scooter to town.

Enjoy your new scooters!!

No, definitely not, but since Dh and I work opposite shifts, we can share one vehicle, that had cute down tremendously on use of gas.

My boss bought one. He drives his to the train station and takes the train into the city for work:thumbsup2 He says he loves it!

I actually have been thinking about buying a scooter as an alternative to buying a second car. One of the ways my family saves money is by only having one car and when gas was not like it is today, it was feasible. Now the back and forth is breaking the budget with gas prices. I live really close to work and it would all be street driving. I may just join you op :-) I know you could probably get a good reliable used scooter but I'd love to get a vespa :lovestruc

New scooters can easily hit up to $5000. Friend of mine bought one a couple of summers ago and it was about $3500.

Personally, I'm really considering something like an old Honda CB350 for commuting to/from downtown. I'd take the bus but public transportion in Orlando is pitiful if you're going more than a few miles down just one road.

It was $1250.00 for a 150 cc....has a trunk and windshield....and free shipping. We did do a lot of looking and pricing...this was the best deal we could find. A dealer in our area wanted almost $2800.00 for the same scooter.

My Dad bought my sister one the first time gas went up. She rode it to work a few times. We live in town and work in town so it worked great. But then school started and she can't take two kids to school on it so she went back to driving her car.

No. I have never driven one, but I have 3 young kids who need somewhere to sit and many places we go would take FOREVER in a scooter to get to.

How fast does your scooter go and is it legal on all streets and highways?

I bought a 49cc motorbike at a yard sale 3 years ago for 200 dollars. I use it 5 to 6 months out of the year for my half mile commute to work. No license or insurance needed and I use a gallon of gas every couple of months. If my commute was any longer I wouldn't use it because I probably wouln't survive a year on it, too slow and people don't pay attention.

I have thought about it. But around here you'd be dead or seriously injured eventually. Very aggressive drivers, plus tourist/heavy work traffic is not a good combo for a scooter. I have to go on Interstate to go through a tunnel to get to work (and my drive is 40+ miles one way). Plus, all it would take is one day of unexpected pouring down rain for me to get rid of it!

I hope it works out for you OP! :goodvibes

It looks like fun, but I would be totally too scared...being in a 4000+lb SUV is scary enough for me.

I told DH I wanted to buy a Vespa scooter to be-bop around town and he said, "No way! You need metal all around you!!"

No but I'm thinking about selling our scooter now that gas prices are going up. We don't go anywhere anymore....it's just a little 50cc so it wouldn't get over 45-50 miles an hour. I figured it's just sitting here so someone might can use it for little store trips...etc.

I would be too scared to drive one back and forth to work or anything like that though....but then I've never been too fond of any motorcycle type vehicle.

My DH is seriously considering getting a scooter for himself to save on gas going back and forth to work. If you don't mind, can you link where you purchased the scooter and I'll send it over to him? or send it via PM?

Check your state laws if you're looking into a scooter. In many states, all you need is a driver's license, not a motorcycle license. :)

Funny you happen to ask! I am going to Atlanta tomorrow to buy one!!! We found a dealer on Craigslist that is selling 150cc for $1200. I live on Fort Benning where the speed limit is 35mph and in some areas only 15mph. I live 3.2 miles from work and drive a Suburban. Gas is killing our Disney budget.

My husband rides a Harley and it's been helping the gas issue, but I can't wait to get on that scooter. I don't plan to take it off post and use it as it would be very unsafe.

I prefer to be the passenger on a motorcycle in heavy traffic. I have my MC license and have taken the Army-required motorcycle safety class so I am set!!

Set to save some money!!!:banana::banana::banana:
