Anyone buy a fridge?

Just wondering if anyone has ever bought a little fridge instead of renting one? Since we are driving this time, it wouldn't be a problem to bring one and then we could always use it at home or on our next trip if we drive again. Kind of like an investment instead of renting one. What do you think? I haven't looked yet but I was thinking maybe $60 at Walmart or Target?

Thanks,
Kim

We use a electric coleman cooler instead. It has a adaptor to use in the car while driving down too since I take sandwiches and find a park to eat and let the kids run around. We use ours for weekend trips and parties much easier to carry into hotels than a refrig.

wow I was just having this conversation with my husband yesterday. We too drive and live in the Boston area. I would buy a fridge if I were you. Go to Wal Mart in Salem NH they had some really good deals. The cooler is actually more money than the fridge. YOu can get one of the small ones for about 40. at BJ's or Costco too. Since they are getting ready for back to school they are just starting to get them in. I was just wondering about where you are staying? YOu might want to think about staying at one of the suite hotels and have a complete kitchen.

I bought a Coleman Thermoelectric Cooler last year and it has been a great purchase. I used it on a trip to Texas (long) and a trip to Disney. It paid for itself just in the one trip to Disney over the price of renting one of their's for a week. It was light-weight and fit nicely in the back of the van. We also have pulled it out at holidays and plugged it up to have a little extra refrigerator space. I also use it when traveling to family reunions to keep the dishes I make cool. Overall, we've been pleased with the cooler.

You can also rent off site from www.abbf.com Their price for rental for 4-7 days is only $45. They will deliver it to your resort and pick up at the end of your stay.

Another vote for the thermoelectric cooler. It may cost a bit more than a fridge, but its much more useful since you can use it in the car and in the hotel. We've had one for years and have taken it everywhere from Canada to Florida. Its great for keeping snacks and drinks cool on the road. Its also easier to carry around than a fridge.

I bought an electric cooler to bring to WDW too. Since we are driving, we can pack our lunch and bring cold cuts, drinks and salads!

I also bought the cooler from WalMart. Great deal. We can use it in the car and then the hotel room. I already save $ 15.00 dollars when i bought it compared to renting it at the hotel.. I love to save money...

How do you plug your coleman cooler in??? I assume you do it in the lighter thing (like a cell phone)...

Also, where do you put the cooler?? Would it have to go under the feet of the people in the back seat our would the cord be long enough to run to a trunk?

Thanks!

It plugs in to the power outlet (cigarette lighter).

As for where to put it - we have a minivan so not a problem. Putting it in th trunk shouldn't be a problem as long as you can run the cord into the car to plug it in.

I read somewhere (epinions maybe?) that these electric coolers have a very short lifespan.

I also read that they're good for keeping things cold (i.e., milk straight from your fridge), but they're not so good at making warm things cold (i.e., room temperature canned sodas would take a very long time to become cold).

Can anyone verify or disprove these things?

Small refrigerators, on the other hand, last forever. I still have one that was a gift when I went to college in 1984.

We bought a Coleman Thermoelectric Cooler in early 2001 and we use it on every trip we drive. Its been great. We haven't tried to use the heater yet. Worth every penny.

We've had our cooler for about 6 years and have taken it on quite a few trips. We've also used it in the house when we've had parties to keep drinks chilled. It may not be as durable as a fridge but its a lot more convenient.

As for cooling, you are correct. It is better at keeping cold things cold. It is not too good at chilling room temperature stuff. It is best if everything is cold when it goes in.

The coolers do not keep things very cold. Personally I hate ours! If you want something that is cold and refreshing use a fridge. The coolers only cool so many degrees below the outside temp in the room or car. So if your car is 80 degrees then the cooler is about 30 degrees colder. If your room is 72 then the cooler is 42. That is not cold enough for me so I rent a fridge. I do take the cooler on our boat so that it keeps our sandwiches chilled til we eat them. I pack ice for my drinks.

My parents bought one of those electric coolers for their car trips to MI. It lasted about three trips. They liked it alot while it lasted.

I have a question for those of you who bring the minifridge with you. Do you just tag it and load it up like it is a piece of luggage when checking your bags in at the hotel? We drive and I loved having the little fridges at the Poly and Dolphin. But we wont always be in a delux! Plus we have a pop up camper. Does anyone have a particular brand they recommend?

Thanks.

I can't believe I found this thread.

I was just thinking today about how I would like to take the little fridge in my son's room (MIL 's from nursing home) and thought my husband would freak at my cheapness and was feeling guilty how bad this would be. Now I see people do this and feel sooo much better. And I debated hotel/motels have problems with this, any instances?

And I get the opinion the electric coolers are no good? Any good brands or positiive feelings? I was debating to get one for my husband for his work truck for lunches on these hot days. Please let me know

Thank you

We're DVC members, so my kids are now used to having a fridge on vacation. On a trip last Easter, we did not stay at a DVC unit because we were able to snag a really good room rate on-property without using our points. I purchased the Coleman thermo-electric cooler right before that trip, and I was pleased with it. Because we were able to plug it up in the van on the drive down and use it like we would a regular cooler, I did not feel it was just "sucking up space". When we arrived at WDW, we checked it at bell services, and requested they keep it plugged into an outlet for us until our room was ready. In my opinion, there are pros and cons to purchasing this type of cooler over a small fridge. The biggest con would be that it is smaller, and does not keep things as cold as the fridge. On the plus side, though, it does not weigh as much as a small fridge, so getting it to your room is easier. I like being able to use it in my car(we just bought a new Suburban!!)to go places like the park, and plan to use it on a camping trip next June with the Boy Scouts. I keep mine plugged in all the time at home, with Gatorade, bottled water,Capri suns, etc. in it for my kids to grab on the way out the door, and I have to say it is pretty nifty. I do agree that it does a better job keeping things cool that are chilled before you put them in, though. I usually purchase 6-packs of bottled water, put them in the back of the cooler, and bring the ones in the back to the front for my kids to use. It usually takes about 24 hours to cool the new waters. When debating whether to go with the thermo-electric or the regular small fridge, I was concerned that once I arrived at WDW with the fridge, it would take a while to get it cold enough to put food into it after we plugged it up. At least with the Coleman, if you use it in the car for the drive down, it is cold when you arrive. I hope this helps a little.
