Has anyone been to Williamsburg in Virginia. I'm considering it as a low speed alternative to Orlando next year but I was wondering how the experience compared.

I know there's a Busch gardens and a waterpark, but are the historical sites enough to keep you going.

Oh and outlets!! what about outlets!!!!

We went to Williamsburg a few years back now and found it to be a really good place for a slightly more relaxed American adventure. We travelled around a fair bit and visited all sorts of interesting places.

We did Busch Gardens (which was great btw), Colonial Williamsburg (the living history interpreters are really interesting to talk to). Other places to look into are Historic Jamestown, Carter's Grove (Where we met a fantastic interpreter called Mr Watson in the slave plantation huts),

I think that we drove from Washington to Williamsburg, stopping a few times on the way. If you can go further afield, and don't mind the driving I'd highly recommend heading up to Alexandria (just south of DC) and checking out the History and Archaeology Museum there. It's fairly close to Mount Vernon (George Washington's Home, which was undergoing major renovation when we were there) which is also worth a visit if you like your history.

Even further afield, we spent two days driving the Skyline drive, through the Shenandoah National Park, along the mountain tops. A really good place to go if you like spectacular scenery, and there's a couple of nice guesthouses up there to stay in. If you start at the top and work down you come out fairly close to a number of historic sites including Lexington, and about half way down the trail you can take a detour to a place called Luray where they have some really cool caverns.

Sorry if this all seems a bit confused, it was a while ago, and the year before that we went to Boston and travelled around there too, so I forget precisely what we did when!!! If you want any more info on any of the above just say and I'll dig it out. My family hoards travel docs and maps and stuff from every holiday we've ever been on!

We where there during 9/11, its a lovely place well worth visiting. Colonial Williamsburg is amazing we also visited the Blue Ridge mountains + Richmond + Washington DC and Norfolk.

Just popping this over to the CB as it's not Florida, WDW or Disneyland related :)

Thanks for the replies. I really fancy a tour round the Blue Ridge mountains and Shenandoah but I've got to convince my wife that it's not all hiking!!

Williamsburg is incredible. Well worth the trip. The 'old' area is very large, and you could easily spend a day just doing that. Outlet malls are average. If you are going to WDW, wait. Then you could go to Jamestown, and Yorktown Battlefield, where, em....er...., well let just say things didn't work out too well for the British.
Jamestown and Yorktown are only a few miles apart, and both are only about 20 minutes from Williamsburg. Once the capital of Virginia, btw.
However Williamsburg is a few hours south of DC.
Blue Ridge drive is great also. Actually, all of Virginia is fabulous. You could do Jefferson's home at Monticello, and on the way there pass dozens of American Civil War sites. YOu'd spend so much time there in Virginia you'd never make it to WDW.

That's settled then, the wife's ok'd it. WDW in Oct, Williamsburg in May. Thanks!

Colonial Williamsburg was the area, and name I was trying to to think of. I'm sure they have a web site.

we love williamsburg, and may should be a nice month to visit. not too hot yet, but things are blooming and getting going. Make sure to do some of the evening tours in the historic district. they cost extra but are well worth the money. many sell out well in advance, so make sure you reserve any you are interested in (or buy tix for as soon as you get there) a great site is www.history.org

I'm not sure what the hours are for busch gardens in may...that is something you may want to check out as you are planning. my guess is they may be limited then (but again, I'm not totally sure).

if you are heading over to skyline drive, make sure to stop at monticello (thomas jefferson's home). its gorgeous, very interesting tours. the university of virginia is right down the road from it and also worth a look.

eta, I just did a quick search for busch gardens and their hours look fine for may. not sure why I thought they'd be short. site for you here

Bite your tongue, sir! You could easily spend three days there, properly doing just the hisotrical area!

Williamsburg is my favorite place in the world... next to Disneyworld.

I live in Richmond Va. so we go to Williamsburg all the time - we were there on Sunday (we can get there in about 45-60 minutes.) It's a great place and you will love it! As one person said the historic area could take longer than a day - I would say it depends on how much you love history - for most a day is about right.... I agree the evening tours are really nice - could combine some with other days.

The Water PArk is called Water Country Usa - link:

There is a wild hotel too with a water park IN it (costly, but if your budget allows very cool!) It's called Great Wolf Lodge:

Someone mentieond Jamestown and thats a great idea - maybe 1/2 a day. The Welcome center and historical area has just been redone to get ready for their 400th birthday in 2007 - so its very new and nice. (They expect huge crowds in 2007..)

Yorktown is nice too.
Good info website for all 3:

And last, as a HUGE fan of the Va. Mountains - try to talk the wife into a visit. Like so much in Va. You can get to the foothills in just over an hour. And while there is great hiking (inlcuding beautiful, yet not too difficult hiking..) there is a lot of "other."

Have you seen DC? If not, I would include that - its only 2 1/2 hours form Williamsburg - TONS to do there ofcourse!

OK - I'll stop now! Good luck!!!

OMG - almost forgot about this - sorry!!! Some are GREAT here ( the best one is "Prime Outlets" http://www.visitwilliamsburg.com/primeoutlets.htm ) - others have been around SO long that they are quite run-down and not worth the time, unfortuantly ("The Pottery"....an old favorite of mine, but WAY past its prime...) .....lots of good shopping!! :thumbsup2

If going to the blue ridge mountains, stay a night at skyland lodge :thumbsup2

Bull run is another place to visit, but if i had my choice i'd go here Pamplin Historical Park and The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier!

Are you into Nascar racing ? Richmond usually holds some races.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'd originally planned on a ten day break but I might extend that now. It's the history and the mountains that interest me, outlets and parks for my wife.

VA bear, enjoy the Wilderness Lodge. You have to try the cowboy skillet in the whispering canyon.
