Anyone been to Stockholm, Sweden?

I have the opportunity to go to Stockholm with my mom at the end of the month. All that I would really have to pay for is my airfare and any sight-seeing and possibly lunches. Her company will pick up everything else. It sounds like the chance of a lifetime - and I would be crazy to pass it up.

I am wondering what is there to do - especially in the middle of winter? Is it safe for me to sightsee on my own (while my mom is at her tradeshow)? What about the food? I am a pretty (read: very) picky eater...will I be able to find something that is "americanized?"

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and input.

If you want really great "americanized" food... stay at home!

The joy of traveling is exploring another another culture, trying new food and new experiences. Go with an open mind and I'm sure that you will find something that you like on the smorgasbord.

Check out Rick Steves' book on Scandinavia for self-guided tours.

I've only passed thru Sweden but two years ago spent a week in neighboring Norway. If nothing else you'll find food to suit you in the grocery stores but most likely you'll figure out something at restaurants. And McDonalds is everywhere. Mostly the foods are fairly bland with lots of fish and cheese. We had the funniest experience since we wouldn't have minded more "authentic" food. We stayed with distant family in one town and friends in a second town. We were served meatballs at both places and tacos too! :rotfl: Then our last night they pulled out all the stops with an authentic traditional Christmas meal. I'm guessing you wouldn't have done well with that at all! lol

I wouldn't have had concerns about sight seeing on my own. I'd do some research online to catch the hot spots. At this time of the year daytime will be shorter the weather cool to cold.

Have fun!!!

I was in Stockholm a few years ago, in April. It will be quite chilly there, so dress warm! Sweden is very, very safe. In fact you may even come across a baby bundled up, fast asleep in it's stroller, sitting outside, while it's mother or father steps inside a coffee shop.

Most hotels I stayed in served a wonderful European breakfast at the hotel, which had everything from eggs, breads, cheeses and fruits. You will be able to find foods from all over the world, so there shouldn't be an issue with finding something you'd like.

Have fun shopping! They have some amazing glass stores and be sure to enjoy the "old" city (I forget what they call it). It is absolutely rich with interesting history!

One of our stops on our Baltic cruise last year was in Stockholm. I wish we had more time to explore. It's a great city / country. We weren't able to go to the Vasa museum but heard wonderful things about it. I would go back in a heart beat.

Thanks for all of your responses. I have decided to go - I am booked and really excited! A disser from another board is from Sweden ahd gave me a ton of information from money to shopping. She is great :thumbsup2.

Great choice! Never turn down a chance to travel!
You will find plenty of sites online with all kinds of things to do. Buy a travel guidebook, maybe a language guide, search Stockholm in images to get some ideas of cool places to see and photograph. Above all- like pjacobi said, travel with an open mind and enjoy. I'm a vegetarian and a picky eater and I've made it through, just fine, in many European countries(not Sweden yet) without any 'Americanized' food. You can check out a menu before deciding on a place to eat.
