I don't remember needing them on our last trip but think I read somewhere on these boards to bring them bc the water is rocky?? Anyone been recently who can confirm that water shoes are definitely needed?

"Definitely" is a matter of preference. Yes, the beach/water can be rocky, with broken shells. Some people don't mind it. I prefer water shoes.

I have to wear something at CC - the sand is a little rocky and can get soooo hot!

You may certainly want them at Serenity Bay. There is a bit of shell action when you first get to the waters edge.

All 8 times I have been to CC, I am glad I had my water shoes.

I have tried many times to get my family to wear water shoes - mainly for stingray protection. But to no avail. they are heavy in a suitcase and have travelled a few exotic places and no one will use them lol! So we are going to go without and I think we will be fine.

So it sounds like the sand there is the type that retains heat? Unlike, for example the crushed white shell sand in the Cancun/Cozumel area?

I didn't wear water shoes at CC this past April. We were only on the family beach so maybe SB is different but I actually remember wishing I had water shoes at other ports but not at CC.

I have tender feet. The "sand" on Castaway Cay is crushed sea shells, not sand. This IMHO is b/c it is part of a coral reef.
That being said, I need shoes. We have done 2 different things:
(1) buy cheap water shoes at Walmart (clearance is best) and don't bring them home
(2) wear Crocs. Crocs float and are easy to put on and take off.

Hi! We just had flip flops - left them at our chairs when we went swimming - we went in April. The sand may be quite a bit hotter...okay, I am of no help! Have a blast!

I take a pair on every cruise. They are the netting kind at Wal-Mart for $5. They are cheap enough to discard OR I bring mine home and wash them and stick them away for the next cruise.

Yes! I was at Walmart last week and picked up some of the $5 ones for our cruise in August. They are cheap enough that I don't even care if they wear them or not - but it's good to have just in case.

A funny story just between us! After the day at CC I go out on the balcony to knock the sand off, one particular cruise we were on deck 8. Well, I lean the shoes over the edge and shake the sand. And ooops, I dropped 1 of the shoes onto an extended balcony on deck 5. Well, I had to do everything not to let me DW see over the side and down to see a size 12 shoe sitting on their balcony. The next day it was gone. Man was I relieved! Bought some new ones for the next cruise.

Then I was thinking, last cruise I was out shaking the sand again. And all the sudden I see a hand come over the edge a couple of floors down. He acts like he sees something going over the edge and investigates. Pretty sure he looks over the edge and sees me with my beach shoes. And you should have seen the look on his face! Like I was deliberately shaking sand out of shoes to land on his outstretched arm. It was funny at the time. Should have dropped the shoe now that I think of it.......

After both DW and I stepped on an urchin last year on SB's sand bar, DW wore water shoes out to the sand bar last week.

I wish I had them last year at SB, it was a bit uncomfortable walking in & out of the water.
