Anyone Been on Mission Space Lately

I love roller coasters, simulators, anything for a thrill, BUT Mission Space is a ride I will never go on again. While you are on it the ride itself is cool. I liked it until I got out of the capsule & was immiedately dizzy & nauseous :crazy2:
It gave me a headache for the rest of the day. I would never go back again.

Hello, mommykds  !
I felt exactly like that after my first ride on it shortly after it opened. . .did not really enjoy anything else we did for the rest of the day :crazy2: . . .I'm sorry you felt so bad  . I tried it again this year, and it was better for me.

I think MS is one of the best rides in Disney, it was awesome, I would definitely do it again! Everyone in our capsule loved it! :earsboy:

Hey Peter  !

On our trip to WDW about a month ago, a bus driver told several us sitting in the front on his bus that M:S has adjusted its Gs from 4 to 2 1/2 because of the some nausea and sickness issues that guests experienced with it. He explained that he was one of several cast members who rode on it prior to opening and that even Gary Sinise (capcom on M:S) himself felt a bit sick after the ride :earboy2: !

DH and I could tell that it was toned down prior to the bus driver's information, and in DH's assessment, a lot (to him). We both still enjoyed the ride, but we could tell it was different.

:wave2:
I can assure you that while it may have felt different, it was not. The exact performance of the system was determined before construction and was never adjusted. Many things can make it feel different to you including temperature, and time of day, however it has remained exactly the same.

Also I never meant that the same people who get sick on Dumbo would get sick on M:S. My point was that many people who would not ride Dumbo ride M:S not knowing what to expect. While they do tell you, people in general tend not to listen. Most people who have problems on M:S who can ride other spinning problems have problems with simulator-based attractions in general.

Made me nauseated, bu for me I was over it pretty quick.

I only rode the one time, but my DS22 and his best friend went on it 3-4 times....ARGH, that WOULD have done me in.

I will ride it again in Sept. but probably only once that trip too.

I've ridden this three times total (2 July and 1 Feb.) and I am a motion sickness prone person. The first time I followed all directions and all was fine, The second time I felt queesy and disoriented--and that was my fault for not following directions, I closed my eyes and diverted them when open around the cabin. This past Feb trip I rode again, following the directions and had no difficulty. The barf bags are still available should anyone need them!

I rode it in January 2004, shortly after it opened. I'm not a huge coaster fan, but I'm also not one to feel motion sickness. After Mission:Space, I was nauseous for about an hour. The effect itself is pretty cool:

They tell you to watch the screen right in front of you and don't look away from it. During 'take-off' your eyes are telling you that you are going straight up, but the effect is achieved by spinning you like one of those rotary rides. That's what makes your arms feel heavy and also makes you feel like you are being pushed back in your seat. So your eyes are telling you one thing and your brain is telling you something else. To me, that was extremely disorienting. Since you are spinning, it's really hard to stare straight ahead, your eyes want to wiggle from one side to the other. (Kind of like that feeling when you spin around in a chair and then stop it suddenly and try to look straight ahead.)

The rest of the ride is bumpy, but not as bad as the initial take off (for me, at least). I'm glad I rode it, it has really cool effects. However, I will NEVER ride it again.

Btw, my Mom has migraine headaches and there were huge warnings telling people with migraines not to ride. She opted to wait for me. While she was waiting, she saw three teenage boys get off (she said they looked like the 'I eat roller coasters for lunch' type). All sat down immediately outside of the exit and they were quite green, according to Mom.

I ride anything with no problem, but I felt "off" all afternoon after I rode Mission Space. It didn't help that someone in the next capsule threw up repeatedly. I'm glad I did it once, but I won't go on again.

The only thing I love about the ride is sitting in the play area with my kids and watching people exit the ride. It's like watching people climb out of a train wreck--some are pumped up, some look like they're just glad they survived, and most look like the train landed on them. :)

I have rode it several times since it has opened. This is the only ride that makes me feel sick when I get off. Yes, I go back on like a fool. The trick to the ride is to focus straight ahead & not to move your eyes at all. As to people getting sick, each time I have been on it, I have seen someone sick! Once I even saw someone have a seizure after getting off!

The very first time I rode, I felt a little woozy for about 10-15 minutes after I got off (I did not throw up), but after sitting for a few mins, I felt fine. Subsequent rides left me with no ill feelings.

what exactly are the directions for riding? besides looking straight ahead??

btw- great picture eric, but you should put a black 'arm band' around the cup!

We were there a couple of weeks ago and I was sure that I was exactly the type of person who shouldn't go on it -- you know, can't read in cars, even maps, without feeling extremely sick. But so is my daughter (7), and she insisted she wanted to try it with my husband. I was hesitant to let her do so, since she has gotten sick COUNTLESS times in the car, but left it up to her. She thought it was great. So great, that I decided to try it. I made sure I followed their directions re where to look to a tee, and LOVED the ride. (Oh, and made sure I did it BEFORE lunch).

Do NOT look around the cabin or close your eyes. I say if in doubt, try it -- I really thought it was one of the best attractions at WDW.

Its simple, just keep your head back, and eyes forward. If you look around you will begin to notice that you are spinning.

I guess it is pretty obvious that everyone reacts differently to the ride. I am 56 years old and rode it for the second time last week. It was frankly, more intense than I remembered if from the first time but I had no ill effects from the ride. The first time I rode I felt a little "wobbly" for about an hour after but this time nothing.

My advise is to take your first ride at the end of the day. That way if you do have long range "balance and orientation" problems it won't disrupt your entire day.

I too believe that the more you think about it the worse it gets. The brain is not always your best friend. It really doesn't matter what causes one to have a negative reaction to it. If you have one, it can be unpleasant. I would hate to see anyone miss out on this ride because it is so unique. Try it if you don't have any obvious health problems (inner ear, etc.). It is worth the effort, at least once.

    :worship:

I was very worried about Mission Space based on what I had read. Rides such as TOT had bothered me quite abit on our previous trip. The morning we went to EPCOT, I still wasn't sure whether or not I would ride it. My boys finally convinced me to get on. And boy, am I glad I did. The feeling you get when you take off is unbelievable, and yes I will admit I didn't feel 100% during the ride, but after I felt no sick or out of balance sensations such as I had read many, many times. You have to give it a try, I know I am looking forward to riding it again next year. :earsboy:

When we were there in January my 8 y/o GD wanted to ride it. My son and I were both doubtful, but I had promised her I would ride anything she did. We basically shamed her dad into it. Anyway as we were standing outside talking about it and asking her if she was sure she wanted to go on it, three teenage-early 20 y/o boys came out. One made it to a trash can and the other two just leaned over the railing to lose their cookies. My GD turned kinda green and said she would think about it and decide later. We never did go on it.

other than the fact i thought i was having a heart attack on it. The g forces are incredible on it, i really enjoyed it. Cant wait to do it again.

Ditto that for me. I loved the ride, but it is "intense" I think if you follow the "rules" and don't look sideways and stare at the screen it makes for a much better ride. I took my 5y/o DS on the ride with me and was concerned for him when we blasted off, of course he LOVED it and we went on it 3 times in a row!! (it was january and no waits...except for the wait for more people to fill the pods)

I felt a little off for 15 minutes or so after. My 7 year old LOVES it (rode it the first time last summer when she was 6) as does my husband - he thinks it's the best ride at WDW. I only rode it with her because my husband did not go with us on our last trip.

That being said, all you can do is try it.

We rode it for the first time in February. I was very nervous, based on everthing I had read and I do tend to get a little sick on rides.

Mission Space was great - I would ride it again. I don't think it's something I could ride over and over. I think the key is to just relax and keep your eyes on the screen. I didn't see anyone getting sick.
