Anyone back from Alaska yet?

Did anyone do the zipling at Ketchikan? Did you feel safe? Were there lots of mosquitoes? DD has severe reaction to mosquito bite. The bitten part turns into a blister with about 1.5 inch in diameter. I need to be prepared for it. TIA!

Thanks so much.

I debated packing a winter coat and left it home. Glad I did. I packed a black llbean thin lined waterproof jacket; a white zipped hooded sweatshirt; a black fleece pullover and a gray fleece zipped cardigan type jacket. I really didn't need that black fleece pullover this trip but wanted options just in case. I usually alternated between the white sweatshirt and the gray fleece cardigan most of the time with or without the waterproof jacket and wore a short sleeved shirt underneath.

In fact it was in the mid 80's in every port with clear blue skies and perfect views as far as the eye could see for both land and sea days. We were so blessed.
So I was walking around in a short sleeved shirt!

For the dogsledding (we booked it for Skagway): the rule of thumb is plan on 20 degrees cooler than the temp on the ground. The high was in the 80's that day but by the time of our excursion at 2:30pm the temps had dropped to mid 70's. check out the short sleeves! (including my son walking in front of me)

As we approached the glacier, the temp reading in the chopper was 48 degrees but it felt much warmer on the ground in the sun. (mid/high 50's) a bit cooler of course when you're sledding. The instructors were not wearing much.

You will be given glacier boots with velcro straps which fit over your shoes and an orange safety vest with pockets to wear before boarding the helicopter. You cannot bring a bag but you can fit your camera in the pockets.

Here - you can see our safety vests.
I'm wearing the llbean waterproof jacket and the gray fleece zipped cardigan with a t-shirt and jeans. My son has only 2 layers on since his jacket was lined.
My husband wore a waterproof rain jacket shell from The North Face (on sale at REI), plus a very thin black nylon hooded pullover and a t-shirt.

When we arrived at the camp, we were offered gloves, hats and sunglasses to borrow if needed.

OMG spectacular views from the helicopter. I LOVED this cruise! So jealous for those getting ready to go.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply and the additional pictures. Your pics have me so excited for our excursion... I'm hoping weather doesn't cancel our excursion! Real-life experience is very helpful and this will help to guide my packing... now, I just have to start packing!

We cruised June 17-24, 2013 and the only place I really remember them being a slight nuisance was in Skagway. I had read about them ahead of time and knew to expect them but gosh they were HUGE! We did the White Rail Pass and they were inside the train cars and our entire car was using a magazine to swat them to kill them. They were also on our verandah while in port. I believe June is the biggest opportunity for them, then it starts declining so hopefully you'll be okay but I would prepare (based on what you mentioned) just in case. As I remember they were in the other ports too, but nothing like Skagway.

I'm wondering how close DCL is able to dock in the three ports? I've been reading prior years trip reports and it seems like especially in Juneau the Wonder docks quite a ways from town.

Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up! I will definitely get prepared for Skagway!! :thanks:

We have a limited Budget, which one would you do in Vancouver Grouse Mountain of Capilano Suspensión bridge?

I would definitely do Capilano...no question. It was simply amazing.

From what I read, it takes until 2ish to get to Tracy Arm and spends about 30 minutes there. As much fun as mixology is, I don't want to do that instead of Tracy Arm. I have done mixology once, and I have never been to Alaska. Easy decision, but I really wanted to do both.

You enter Tracy Arm around noon and arrive at Sawyer Glacier around 3:00.

We are also just back. I highly recommend renting a car in Skagway and driving the Klondike Highway. It cost us $200 for a minivan for the six of us instead of $200 per person for the Chilkoot Charter or White Pass excursions. We drove directly to Caribou Crossing and had about an hour with the sled dog puppies all to ourselves before the first bus arrived. Once that happened there were about 50-75 people all trying to see the puppies at once. We then drove to Emerald Lake and then made the return trip. We did all our stopping on the way back, avoiding the buses completely. We saw a mother bear and her two cubs and pulled over to watch them for about 20 minutes. It was a magical day...made even more so because of the low cost.

In Juneau we did the Enchanted Taku Glacier Fightseeing and Salmon Feast through DCL. In Ketchikan we did the Wilderness Explorer and Crab Feast, also through DCL. Both were absolutely amazing and I highly recommend both.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to PM me!

Last year we took the Take Lodge excursion in Juneau the second week of June. The mosquitoes were very thick, of course you are out in the wilderness when you are at the lodge. Fortunately the staff at the lodge had a basket of mosquito repellant available for general use. We had to apply it liberally.

those mosquito stories sound pretty bad. We luckily did not encounter any. Not sure if it was because of the time of year or what? Our cruise sailed 5/25 - 6/1/15.
Even hiking to the falls at Mendenhall glacier, we didn't have any problems. And fortunately, our White Pass Rail car was mosquito free. We packed repellent, but never took it out.

:scared1: Now I am worried! Thanks for the heads up about Juneau.

I didn't mean to scare anyone. The only place we encountered mosquitoes was at the Taku Lodge and that is to be expected since you are really out in the wilderness. We had no problems in the ports themselves and on the excursions we took in Skagway or Ketchikan.

So, a few things about mosquitos---they will be out all summer long as well as through the fall. Part of the issue of whether you will have to deal with them depends on where you are (city center vs. out on a trail or where it is grassy and woody). Another thing that makes a difference is weather. So if it is nice weather (yay for nice weather) a downside is that the mosquitos are also very fond of it while the rain keeps them away and less prevalent. Also, the time of day can make a difference as well---although of course you can encounter them at any time, they are particularly active in the early evening (think 4-7 ish). So a sunny day in the woods at 5 pm is a combination that should be avoided if you can.

A nice safe tour is on the glacier---no mosquitos up there!

The only place we encountered mosquitoes was at Taku Lodge. They weren't too bad, but definitely noticeable. We had read about them pre-cruise and brought some bug spray with us. We used it before we even got on the plane and then again when we arrived. They do have some there for you to use.

All that said, Taku Lodge was amazing. The meal was fantastic, the staff was warm and welcoming and the flightseeing to/from was breathtaking.

Did anyone do the Klondike Family Challenge in Skagway? We've booked this for our July cruise and are anxious to hear reviews.

Yep, on the Member Cruise mixology was at 2pm on the last sea day, and yes, we saw your son! BTW, it was nice to meet you guys!

One thing we did and enjoyed was going into the Yukon with TNTours98.com. We enjoyed our trip and sled ride, and our guide Michelle was the best. We also had a great Whale Watch/Glacier tour with JuneauWhaleWatch. Ask for Captain Steve and Jason.

Have a great time everyone.

We have the TNT98 tour booked and I can't wait. Anything you especially loved?

This is exactly what we're doing! Where else did you stop on the way to Emerald Lake? The suspension bridge is on our list. What did you do about lunch? I was thinking we might run into the grocery store in town and bring sandwiches with us.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Its getting me excited!!

We downloaded Muarray's Guide, which I highly recommend. It gives you a mile by mile (and km by km) list of things to see. We visited Carcross, Caribou Crossing, Emerald Lake and stopped at the Alaska/Yukon signs and anywhere we wanted to stop and photograph. We stopped at the Yukon Suspension Bridge on our way back for lunch (we didn't do the bridge). Their buffalo chili, burgers and sliders were delicious and very reasonably priced.

Caribou Crossing charges an $8.50 CAN admission fee and we felt it was well worth it. Sled dog rides are an additional $30 CAN per person but that money goes to help Michelle with her expenses for the dogs and Iditarod training. My DD23 and DMom80 took one and loved it.

I'm not sure if you were asking about food at Capilano or at the Yukon Suspension Bridge. We ate in the cafe at the YSB and it had a beautiful view over the river. We went to Capilano first thing in the morning and headed back to Vancouver for lunch. We actually took the seabus across to Lonsdale Quay. They have lots of different food stalls plus it was Saturday so there was a wonderful farmer's market with even more food options. There is also a food stand right at Capilano. The food smelled wonderful and seemed very popular but we didn't try anything.

My family was on the Wonder starting June 1. There were a few Mosquitos in Ketchikan but not many. My then spent 5 days in Vancouver, Capilano is awesome but it is not for my little kids. It is very easy to do both in one day if you want to hit the highlights of each.

For those looking at the Navigator on the Tracy Arm day, I personally found this to be the highlight of the cruise which included flight seeing tours and the white pass rail tour. We ended up spending hours on end in our verandah just looking at Tracy Arm. 100s of waterfalls, nature everywhere, and for the adults, by far the most memorable time on the cruise. I would easily skip any disney activity to do this day again just sitting outside looking at nature. We played the naturalist talk on tv while we went through which also added to the enjoyment.
