Anyone a chinese cooking expert?

My recipe calls for rice wine vinegar. Is that any different than rice wine? And can't I just substitute regular white vinegar? Does it make enough difference to spend $5 on a bottle of something I probably won't use again?

rice wine vinegar is a bit sweeter and less "harsh" tasting. do you have white wine vinegar? or use regular and a pinch or two of sugar.

oh - and i'm NOT a Chinese cooking expert,but I have had rice wine vinegar on hand and used it in stir frying and such. purists may scream at the idea of making a substitution, but sometimes you have to make do.

You live too far away otherwise I'd offer up some of the rice wine vinegar that I have at home. I've made some asian postickers recently for a Pampered Chef show and needed it for the dipping sauce that went with them.

Sorry I can't help you with substitutions though.

I am not an expert, but I do know that rice wine vinegar is milder and less acidic so it does make a difference. It is also not the same as rice wine.

I don't think there is a good substitute because it will affect the overall taste.

Maybe you can find other recipes to use it up or ask someone you know for some so you don't have to buy a whole bottle? GL!

Rice wine vinegar can be hard to find where I live, but I can find rice wine with no problem. What I have done is use half and half. If the recipe calls for 1 tsp of rice wine vinegar, I use 1/2 tsp rice wine and 1/2 tsp white vinegar. It seems to work for my recipes.
