Anybody there this week? Wired Internet

I'm at OKW, third floor of a building and the wireless, while decent speed, is only available in certain parts of our two bedroom home. It doesn't reach into the master bedroom but works ok in the living room. I can't get full signal anywhere in the suite. Oh well, I brought a Verizon hotspot from home and it rocks on 4g! Hakuna Matata!

We are at SSR now and the wireless and wired connections are available... I brought my wireless router and am using it now... It seems to be a much faster connection using it that way... At least in my head it is...

Hey Duane... If you get a chance, run some tests to speedtest.net and see what you're getting on both. I'd also like to know what default server each chooses (wired and PUBLIC WiFi).

By all means, please know that I am not a computer tech savvy person... I'm usually a IT person's worst nightmare... meaning that I know just enough to be dangerous.

Anyway, I ran the test and the results were surprising...

With using my Cradlepoint wireless router I got the following results:
Ping speed: 26ms
Download speed:.98 Mbps
Upload speed:.41 Mbps
Hosted by Hivelocity in Tampa

Using the guest wireless:
Ping speed: 143ms
Download speed: 2.03 Mbps
Upload speed: 1.94 Mbps
Hosted by: Smallworld Media, located somwhere in Europe (at least according to the map that was shown...

Hope this helps...

Duane

Yep. That tells me more than you might realize. I figured that's what they were doing.

I'm gonna have some fun with this late next week when I get back from my cruise.

Watch here for a new fireworks display. This could get interesting.

Hey Brian, figured it out yet? ;)

A little OT, I'm no IT person, and just wanted some input. We have always paid our online bills while on vacation -- generally because we are thee 2 weeks or longer at a time. I'm a little nervous now about paying them via the "wireless" connection. We've been there since the new system came up (in October) and it worked just fine, but I didn't have to pay any bills that trip. I had considered using the ethernet cable when I have to pay some, possibily on my next trip in January, but for sure in April/May as we are there 3 weeks. WWYD?

Not entirely, but that is curious, isn't it? Dual homed, and an "interestingly" named peering site.

As long as your browser has the little "lock" icon when you are talking to your bill-paying site, you should be fine.

I agree with the others that it should be fine (as long as you see the little lock icon), but what I do is pay my bills prior to leaving for vacation, scheduling for future dates. Can you do that with the bills you need to pay while you are away from home? (the only bill I can't "schedule" is the directv bill so that one will either be early or late!)
