Anybody know anything about professional painting?

Along the lines of how to know how much to charge people for jobs? My dad has got this idea that he wants to do this once he retires, but his main hangup is not knowing what kind of scale or whatever to use in charging for jobs. He's already doing some interior painting jobs on the weekends, but hopes to build on that to create a small business in the next couple of years, which would then include outside jobs and accompanying repairs, etc. Anybody got any ideas? TIA!!
