Hi, I need a huge favor. Can you please give me the names and locations of some hotels in very safe areas? I'm in Louisiana and whenever there is a potential hurricane heading our way I look for places to take my kids. My husband is a police officer therefore I have to leave alone with the kids and a safe area is at the top of my list. Last time we left we were gone for 3 weeks in a roach motel (seriously full of bugs) the kids were dirty just from the floor in this place and there was no place else to go. The area also left ALOT to be desired. I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. Thanks.

I live in Arkansas, so I've stayed in Memphis occasionally. The last time we stayed at the Drury Inn in Southaven, Mississippi and it seemed to be a pretty safe area - not like take your kids on a walk safe - but well lit, close parking, etc. The other times I stayed downtown, which was fine for work purposes, but I wouldn't stay there alone with my kids. There's a mall area east of Memphis - Wolfchase Galleria? I think... Anyway, there may be a nice hotel over there and it's pretty recently developed and looks to be a nicer area than most of Memphis. HTH!!:)

For general areas, if you choose North and East of Memphis on I-40 (for example the Wolfchase area mentioned above) you will likely be OK. For some areas in town - there is a Holiday Inn at University of Memphis that is nice, a part of the business school, and quite safe. There is a Doubletree on Sanderlin that is good, lots of restaurants in that area. Sycamore View is a decent area right off the interstate with lots of hotels and chain restaurants.

I'd stay away from Summer Ave, Downtown, and the airport area, as all those hotels are very hit or miss.

We are at St Jude right now with our dd. I would suggest the Southaven/Walnut Grove area. My Mom came the first week we were here and stayed at Southaven. There is a lot of good shopping and lots of places to eat. We are downtown which can be dangerous but we are on St Jude's campus. We have enjoyed the Pink Palace Museum and carriage rides downtown. Germantown is nice with a mall, etc. I can give you other places in North MS also which is where we are from if you want somewhere closer to stay.

There are lots of decent hotels on Goodman Rd in Southaven/Olive Branch, MS. My parents live just down the road still.

There is a Comfort Suites near Wolfchase which is nice, and one in Olive Branch, MS which looks nice. I like Comfort Suites because they're non-smoking. Some of the ones on Sycamore View are old and run-down looking, but the Drury looks nice from the outside. There's a Comfort Inn in Germantown and (I think) a Courtyard by Marriott in the same area. Germantown is really nice, I used to live there ;) Also, farther out Poplar, in Germantown, there's a Fairfield (I think) that is supposedly nice. They were building a hotel near the outdoor mall in Collierville, that's a nice mall in a very nice area. I don't know if the hotel is finished or not, or what brand.

For the most part, stay out of the Memphis city limits. The Wolfchase area is in Memphis but is still pretty nice. Someone mentioned Walnut Grove, there's a Hampton Inn near Baptist hospital. That's a pretty nice area, in the city. It's near Shelby Farms which is a nice park, but not much else in the immediate area.

Stay safe!!

Thanks for all of the input. We decided on Olive Branch.hopefully we won't have to use it, but we made the reservations just in case. Thnaks again, you all are so helpfull.

Hope you won't need to come, but Olive Branch is a good area. There are lots of restaurants around Goodman road and Hwy 78. Good shopping in Southaven which is at Goodman road and I55.
Hopefully Gustav will not hit NOLA. I just love NOLA

That's very smart of you to think ahead. We're all thinking good thoughts for you.

Hey, I live in Olive Branch! Its very safe here and we just got a new Target!! I agree with what other posters mentioned about safe locations. You can't go wrong with OB. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the town.
