Anyone use winter tires in the winter? Do they make a difference? What happens if you drive on them in the Spring or Fall? What do you do with your non-Winter tires?

I'm curious about how these work and when/how you use them?

Thanks!!

I use studded snows, but then I am an absolute chicken for winter driving. They do make a differance, but I suppose if you had really good all-seasons, that would be ok. I would never drive in the winter with just summer tires, though. Heck, if there are flurries in the air, my Dh drives me anyway, so what am I talking about? :rotfl2:

I've had my snow tires on since last year:lmao: They do make a bit of a difference, but I did grow up driving in the snow so I don't really need them. I just have them on the front.

I'm not sure if they are the same thing that you are talking about but dh changes the tires on my work truck (Tahoe) and on his work truck (Ranger) the day after Thanksgiving. He changes them back in early May.

My usual tires are just the regular stock tires it came with. The other tires are nobby (sp?). They get better traction. I think the guys call them "mudders".

On the farm truck, we keep the nobby ones on year round. Simply, because that truck goes through the fields. Doesn't seem to harm them. But it is mainly on dirt (mud), gravel, or occassionally creek rock. Have never tried them on asphalt.

All of our vehicles have all season mud and snow tires on year round. They have not failed me yet and we get rain, ice and snow.

So what do you do with them when you aren't using them? Just stick them in the garage or do you have to do anything special? Do you change the tires yourself?

Most of the tire shops here will do the seasonal change outs free of charge

dh takes care of it. I know he hoses them down, and then we have a rack that they go up into in one of our barns. They are standing up right. It reminds me of a bike rack...but the holes (gaps?) are wider apart. Dh says it's so they can "breathe" (:lmao: that always gives me the giggles) & expand/contract with the heat. I'm not sure if he uses the pressure washer on them. I just know he says he has to get the salt off of them. Supposedly, the salt dries the tires out.:confused3 Sorry, I am not a car girl.

He has friends that clean them, & then stack them in their garages, though.:confused3

Haven't purchased studded snow tires in over 25 yrs. With the improvement of all season radials & AWD / 4WD, not something we've needed anymore in MA. Only person I know who even carries chains is my dad.

I drive a lot. Weather doesn't stop me. Knock on wood, I've never been stuck. And when I used to work in an office, I was one of the ones who always came into work.

I'm not aware of many people who still do studded snow tires here. They are only allowed Nov - April I think because they damage the roads. Not sure on that.

On my old car I had a set of summer tires & a set of winters. I had the winter tires mounted on original rims the car came with & the summer ones mounted on rims I bought. About Thanksgiving each year I would swap them out, stacked the un-used ones in a corner of the garage until about April.
