Hi, I'm sitting in the surgery waiting room while my DH is having his colon removed:scared1: We went to several Drs to get opinions on whether this surgery is necessary and all agree that his colon cancer will come back its just a matter of time so they all believe removing his colon is the best option. He will have the jpouch. We know he will temporarily have a bag which almost made him not go thru with the surgery. So the doc says the faster he heals the quicker they will be able to remove the bag (take down surgery). anyways, While I'm waiting(its a really long surgery) I was wondering if anyone on the board has any experience with the J-pouch surgery thanks

I don't have any experience with that but wanted to wish your DH a safe and successful surgery and a speedy recovery:hug:

Wishing your dh all the best.

I know one of the posters on the breast cancer thread had this surgery, but she has not posted in quite a while, but she was doing well post surgery.

Hi! I'm 16 and had my colon removed on November 24th due to Ulcerative colitis. I do have the temporary ostomy bag and a J-pouch. One of the stitches in my J-pouch blew a week later so I had to have a second surgery to repair it. Due to all that, I didn't leave the hospital until last Tuesday. I was just told to exercise as much as possible and do Kegels (sp?) so I'm as strong as I can be for the reversal. My surgeon wants to wait 3 months, so we're thinking it'll be in the beginning of April.

Good luck to your husband....adjusting to the bag hasn't been fun so far but it's manageable and I hear it gets easier. If either of you have any questions, feel free to PM me!

Thank you for the kind words. Yesterday was a super long day and he made it through fine:banana: He has been out of it all day today, they are just keeping him drugged up until the pain eases up.

Cinderella94- Wow, so you just had it done too. Dh was told since he was 22he had UC,but the surgeon that performed this surgery said he didnt show he had it:confused3 The main reason he did it is because of the cancer risk. Thank you for offering to talk with me, ill probably take you up on that once he gets home. Im just a little nervous about how this all is going to work.

Yay! I'm glad the surgery went well. A wound care nurse gave us a lot of lessons in the hospital on how to change the bag and everything, and there are literally hundreds of different styles so if he doesn't like how one feels, he can always try another. So don't be afraid to ask questions until you're confident! We were very nervous in the beginning too, but now we change it ('we' meaning my dad helping me) on our own without issue. Good luck! Again, any questions you have just let me know :).
