UGH.. I thought I took care of this. Several yrs ago I thought I was having a bad sinus infection because I would wake with facial pain/eye and ear pain. Dr first gave me antiobotics, because I thought it was sinus related.. Well that didnt work, then more antibotics, then sinus xray, then visit to ENT..then sinus scan..nothing showed up..Went to neourologist..couldnt find anything besides migraine.
After lots of research I realized I do clench my teeth/jaw at night time..and low and behold I got a bite guard made at dentist and it fixed 75% of the problem.. I was so happy, as I wasnt taking daily meds anymore for migraines..
Now, for two weeks, I have been waking up with the stuff..first I wake up[ and feel ok..then 10 minutes later it kicks in the eye pain, the tight head..Ive been taking so Much OTC as well as IMitrex..but I only get 9 a month and nomrally split them...It is so frustrting and depressing to me. I have had my mouth guard adjusted once..but dont know if I need to or not..or what else they can do for me.
Its making me so crabby and unhappy. Tomorrow have to go back to dentist to get some stiches taken out from gum surgery, and will inquire again.

I am so tired of takign so much medicine, and only getting a little relief.

Can anybody relate to this??I am at my wits end. :confused3 All I want to do is lay in bed, and even that doesn thelp much.

So does anybody else get migraines related to TMJ???

chiropractic = the original way of helping TMJ problems.... It's quite often caused by problems in the upper cervical vertebrae. Take care of that and it helps the TMJ feel better. Find a good upper cervical chiropractor.

I helped many people with it when I was practicing, and my chiro's work has helped me with a growing problem with it. Lovely!

Do you clench during the day as well? It might help to wear your bite guard during the day for awhile to train yourself out of the habit. You also might want to focus on stress relief. I haven't suffered from the migraines since I started using my bite guard in high school, but I do remember how agonizing waking up in the morning could be. All that is painful anymore is my jaw occasionally. I hope you find some relief.

I dont think I do clench during the day. Now, I feel very much stressed during the day, and can feel my forehead tighten up..
See I normally get migraines from normal stuff, certain chocolate, change in weather, that time fo the mouth..These headaches/migraines from waking up are different, but definitely migraines, because only go away with Imitrex and rest in dark room..
The worst is that sometimes my actual head doesnt hurt, but my eyes feel like they are being pushed out from the inside..if that makes sense..that is why yrs ago I thought it was sinus related.

So do u still use a bite guard? And if so, do u needed adjusted at all???

The odd thing, I was never formally diagnosed with TMJ...I dont have the normal symptoms. I mean from time to time I would yawn and hear that cracking sound, but it doesnt happen on a regular basis, and sometimes not for months and months...I did a lot of research and went to the dentist with what I found out. He said I didnt have the typical symptoms and such but we could try a bite guard..
I dont grind my teeth, as my teeth arent/werent affected by it.. but I could feel myself clenching tightly when I would wake up during the night.

I am sure it is stress related..as I just recently developed a mild case of IBS...its odd..when MY IBS... is in full gear...I dont have headaches:confused3
But now..dealing with these daily headaches..

I have TMJ and take no medicine. What really helps me are the exercises my sister who is a physical therapist taught me. As long as I do that, no pain at all.

Yes! I know where you are coming from, although mine is much better now. I was having weird, tingling migraines on the right side of my head, jaw pain, tingling and pain down my neck into my shoulder, ear pain. Doc had no idea what was wrong, and I was getting scared it was something serious.

As a last result, I called my dentist. He immediately diagnosed TMD and said my jaw muscles were imbalanced because I clench my jaw at night. He told me to get the cheap mouth guard that you boil to see if that helps. Within two days I felt so much better! I couldn't believe how easy it was, after feeling like crap for probably two months. Yes, I was kicking myself for not seeing the dentist first. :rotfl: I'm starting to notice a few symptoms again, so I think I need to go back to the dentist to get a "real" mouthpiece.

So I definitely can sympathize, and I'm sorry your symptoms are being more stubborn than mine! I hope your dentist can find a solution that takes care of your problem. Feel better soon!

Headaches from TMJ can be caused by a variety of things. Stress is number one.

Another thing to look into is fibromyalgia. I assumed for years I had chronic headaches from stress and depression but nothing anyone tried ever worked to relieve them. Once I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and put on proper treatment my life totally changed!

Now, this is most likely NOT your problem but another avenue for you to pursue. Something is causing the headaches and it's not always TMJ. Look into all the possible causes and find the answer, don't keep suffering! Best of luck and feel free to contact me if you wish!

I sleep with it nightly and whenever I need a nap. I go about once a year to get it built up and resurfaced. I actually go to a guy that strictly deals with TMJ, maybe you should look into that rather than going to your dentist.

Ugh, TMI... caught myself clenching as I read the post where someone asked if you clench during the day! :rotfl: :headache:
