Do any of you foster dogs for a doggie rescue group? If you do, have you adopted any of your fosters;)

I volunteer with an all breeds doggie rescue. I do own two of my own dogs. We have been doing the foster thing for a little over 3 yrs. The other fosters stayed about 4 months until they were adopted. It was a little sad to see them all go, but it was very rewarding as well.

We have had our current foster for almost 2 years:rolleyes: ...Well this January we are officially adopting her. I could not give her up after this time. My husband said her adoption will be my Christmas present;) That is actually AOK with me. She is a black and tan coonhound. In all my wildest doggie dreams, I never thought I would ever adopt a hound dog. She is the sweetest, most laid back/lazy dog I have ever met:) My other dogs are a Golden Retrieiver, and a yellow lab mix, and no w we are adding a hound dog to the mix. Well she has been in the mix for almost 2 years, but she will be legally ours soon. She is a retired hunting dog. My guess she wasn't good at it, as she HATES to be outside, and she never gets off the sofa unless she needs to go potty or eat;)

Awesome!:thumbsup2 I wish I could foster~however, my terrier mix doesn't do well with other dogs:sad2: My boxer/yellow lab loves everyone (or everydog LOL)

I do "rescue transports" instead~I transported a 14 yr old pitt mix to Beckley, WV two weeks ago, what a sweet-heart!!! He was going from a kill-shelter in Preston Co. WV to a rescue in NC.

There are SO many ways to help shelter dogs, from fostering:goodvibes , to rescue transports, volunteering at your local shelter, or donating dog food/supplies.

So glad to hear that you're adding a new family member:love:

My sister in law used to do Golden Retriever rescue. She didn't adopt one, but some family members did. She already had two of her own.

sunlvr...*gasp* you are a foster-failure.

Of course - that translates - to what a lucky puppy!

Congrats on the new family member!

I think people who foster animals are wonderful. Two of my furbabies came from rescue/foster homes, and the last one called to make sure we still lover her!

However, I can see myself so easily becoming that woman on the news who has 106 cats and dogs removed from her home because she was trying to "save" them.
I even told the people at the cat rescue where I got my two girls to remember my name and face and not let me have anymore....:rotfl:

We are considering adopting after the holidays. I spend hours looking at all these sweet dogs on-line. There are just so many. This will be our first dog, and are looking for a medium, somewhat calm dog. That's why we don't want a puppy - so a rescue seems perfect. Would love a Golden Retriever, but they might be a bit big. We have a medium sized fenced yard - but would keep the dog inside most the time I would think.

Any suggestions of what I should look for? I am also a little worried about getting a dog that has so many problems that its owners gave up on him/her. I would love to think I could overcome those problems, but honestly, I don't know. We just want a good family dog.

I am actively trying to talk DH into fostering for a Husky rescue organization. We have 2 dogs -a husky and a shepard/sloughi hound mix. I looked into sloughi rescue, but there really aren't many sloughis in the US. So then I started looking into husky rescue. Our husky is such a sweet, loving dog. And I would love to provide a good temporary home to other huskies waiting for a new family. DH thinks we would get too attached, but I think that is a small sacrifice to make in order to ensure that these dogs have the chance to live a full life.

Please don't think that all rescue dogs have problems, some do but a lot of the time the owners just didn't know what they were taking on and abandon them when they a fully grown. We have a rescue dog who has zero problems, she's a gorgeous dog who's previous owners just abandoned her somewhere. DH's parents have had rescue dogs since he was a baby and never had any issues with any of them.

Which ever breed you decide on the important thing is to fully research before hand, to ensure you are aware of the commitment you're making. Golden's tend to have a good even temprament and may be a good first dog, if you have children make sure you adopt from a good rescue that will have already assessed it's temprament around children and other animals.

Good luck, and I hope you find the perfect rescue dog for you.

We fostered for a few years. I needed to take a break as I am doing a lot of traveling and it isn't fair to a foster for me to be gone for so long. We never adopted one of our fosters, but I did adopt for our group. I saw my Duke's picture posted and knew I needed to have him. He is a true joy for me!

Resuce dogs are truly appreciative, wonderful dogs!:)
