My DN is looking for an apartment or house to rent in Augusta for a year. She went down today to look at different houses/apartments. One house was really nice but in the downtown area. The rent was just $450/month, so I am worried that it is in a bad area. Just wondered if anyone knew where a nice location for housing is there.

Hi Mimi! I live in the town right outside Augusta, and worked in the downtown area when I first moved here @ 11 years ago.

There are certain sections of downtown that aren't very safe. Three are other downtown areas that are safer, and in a more "historic" district. They can be very nice. I was suprised at the rents when I first moved here, as coming from the Northeast, my rent was $500/month (in '93), and we paid $350/month in Augusta!

If you can tell me more about the area she's thinking about (street, landmarks, etc...), I'd be happy to tell you what I know! I'll gladly check the paper for rent costs in what I know to be "nice" areas so that she can compare. Feel free to PM me! :)

The house was located in the "Olde Towne" section. After checking some police statistics for the area, she decided against it. Now she is thinking about a unit in a condo/apartment complex for $725/month- it is on Walton Way. She is doing an internship for a year at various hospitals in Augusta.

Hi Mimi!

I think she made the right decision in not renting in Olde Towne, and it's good she looked up the crime stats! Never would've thought of that!

There are certain sections of Walton Way which are VERY nice--some huge and beautiful homes! For $725 she must be looking in a good area. The rents here are just not that expensive for your average apt.! Walton Way is very convenient to the two biggest hospitals, Medical College of GA and University Hospital. Both are EXCELLENT facilities. The closer you get to the medical complexes, the worse the neighborhoods along Walton Way become. Does the condo/apt. complex have a name? I think as long as she's investigating the crime stats for the area, she's on the right track. And for $725/mo. she should be getting something very nice in this part of GA.

Let me know if I can answer anymore of your questions!

You're more than welcome, Mimi!

I hope dn is happy with her choice of housing and enjoys her intership!:)

I lived in Augusta for a year and a half just recently.

$725 is on the higher end for Augusta (is it 2 bedroom??), but she's likely to get a great place.

I lived near Walton Way on Winter Street (the Summerville area). I rented in a carriage house behind a larger home. Rent was about $375 a month and it was one bedroom with W/D. I loved my landlord, he was always prompt with issues and allowed our cat for a small deposit. If the Walton Way place falls through, I'm happy to give you his name and number. He has several properties throughout the MCG/Walton Way area.

Just PM me. :)

Hi Allison,
it is a two bedroom apartment with a washer and dryer. She will be rooming with one of her friends. If it doesn't work out, I will PM you. Thanks.
