Anybody ever use a pillow case for character autographs?

Just wondering how bulky they are to carry in the parks and if it's easy for the characters to sign on a pillow case. I was looking for something a little different for autographs this trip and came across the pillow case idea. Seems cute, especially for my kids (ages 3 & 6) who would then use them on their pillows at home, but DH is worried it will be too much of a hassle. He just wants us to use the traditional little autograph books you can buy in the parks.

What to you think?

Never done that but it seems like a cool idea. Maybe a t-shirt, hat, or baseball? Have a wonderful trip!

I've read a trip report where someone did this. I'm sure they had an embroidered case made for them by a friend. You need to put some card inside the spot you want signing to give a base to rest on and use permanent sharpies.

I've heard of people doing that. Bring along an embroidery ring so the cloth is tight and can be written on.

We did it for our trip to DL.

I didn't bring an embroidery hoop. I used a really sturdy board about 8" x 10" and kept the pillowcase in place with medium binder clips. It worked out really well for us.

We used Crayola fabric markers and the colors were great and didn't bleed through onto the second layer of the pillowcase.

The pillowcases turned out great!

I've heard of more people doing it for cruises than for WDW. I feel like it might be a hassle to carry it around all day, but that's just me. On a cruise you can go meet the characters and then return the pillowcase to your room so you don't have to worry about carrying it around.

I was actually behind a family at a M & G that I saw do this It worked very well
I keep forgetting to do this myself so thanks for the reminder

Thank you all for the replies! I kind of wanted to do this for the kids. I think it would be a really neat souvenir, something they can actually use every day and it remind them of their trip. I still have autograph books from 3 years ago gathering dust in my office!

Yes. Definitely keep it on a small embroidery hoop. No, it doesn't take much room.

But do buy fabric markers instead of Sharpies. Even though the Sharpies are permanent markers they do run a bit when they get wet.

We are doing this the end of this month. Be sure and wash the pillowcase first (to get the sizing out) and use no fabric softener in wash or dryer. I got a package of 12 Tulip fabric markers at the craft store ~ kids used them at camp on cases and worked fine. I went to the Dollar Store and bought $1 white boards to put inside the case and will use binder clips to keep the case stretched across the white board. Then the case can be easily moved around for autographs.

We've done small canvas bags and then use them to carry my DS's library books. This year we got one off of etsy that was red with a black Mickey head applique and his name embroidered in yellow underneath. We used a clipboard for them to sign on and I would hold it for them. I packed it all in a large zip lock bag. Not as easy as a book but not too bad. You have time to get things ready while you are waiting in line.

All great tips! I had also seen some cases on etsy that we could have personalized with the kids' names on them and I'm thinking this may be the route we end up going. It just seems like fun!

We did this and the hoops are a great idea. The one thing we learned quickly, was to make sure we repositioned it on the pillowcase where wanted the next signature while we waited in line, so as not to be rushed when we got up there, plus then we were not making others wait :)

I also had cut the shape of Mickey's head out of one of my husband's shirts for my girls (he passed away 5yrs ago) so that they would have part of daddy with them as well. My mom sewed that in the very middle and we had Mickey sign right above that. It turned out really cute.

I didn't feel it was too much to carry around. We took it on the days we knew we were doing character meals and for my girls they only wanted specific characters for theirs.

Enjoy!!

It does seem like it might be a hassle. One thing you might want to do is buy postcards at the hotel you are staying at and have them signed

It's really not bulky. We did this one year with all 4 kids so we carried 4 of them all with the special writing hoop on them. They folded up really small and we just carried them around in a 2 gallon ziplock. Very easy. You definitely need to get the hang of quickly moving the hoop around and bring enough fabric markers so you have a few colors to choose from.

We did it last year, we used "painting hoops". they are like embroidery hoops but have a hard back on them to make it easier to sign.
