Anybody ever pull a Ferris Bueller?

I think enough time has passed that I have gotten away with it, so I will confess. It might be a bad thing, but I did it a while back. It might make me a slacker, but I really needed it. I was about to lose my mind so I took off a Friday, went shopping, went to eat and went to see 50 Shades of Grey. I did it all by myself. It might sound lame, but it was therapeutic.

In January I had my parents take the kids for an extra day so I could go shopping by myself.

When I saw this I immediately thought high school. When I was a freshman my best friend and I told each of our parents that the other parent was giving us a ride to school. They went to work and we pulled out my friend's father's corvette convertible. This thing was his pride and joy! We thought we were hot ****! We took it down to NC State University looking for trouble! Well we got it......it broke down right in the middle of campus!!! We had just enough money between the two of us to have the thing towed back to her house. We pushed it in the garage, put the door down and it never happened, if you get my drift. I was an awful teenager.:sad2:

A family member enjoying skipping school, said he was just doing what Ferris did, til I pointed out that Ferris only took one day off. This kid took so many days off, the school attendance office had the family's home phone # on speed dial, or so his parents said. This was in the days before caller I.D. The kid had a good idea what time the school would be calling, so he made sure he was the one who answered it and told his mom it was a wrong number.

Not me, but someone I know used the "sick kid" excuse to drive two states over & buy a boat. As I understand it, this someone (not me) got a call from the boss while he was right in the middle of Indianapolis traffic and he (not me) was just really hoping nobody on the road would blow their horn.

I think nowadays this is called a "mental health day." :rolleyes1 :thumbsup2

Haha, I played hooky from work one time by calling in and saying my car had broken down and I was stuck at the repair shop. Right then, my stupid dogs started barking. I was quick to make some comment about "the annoying dogs at the junkyard next door."

I've taken mental health days off and on over the years, including a couple in high school my parents never knew about. My favorite, however, was the very first mental health day I ever took and I was all of 8 or 9. We had moved to california recently and my parents (my parents!) surprised us and took us to Disneyland instead of school one glorious day. I remember being so shocked, it was definitely not like them.

My parents used to let me have mental health days. My step mother and I would shop or go to Disney for the day

Usually it was after a big test or if I had a bad time dealing with my bio mom.

I really cherish that time with her, and I graduated with honors so no harm was done.

I gave my kids mental health days last year when their dad was deployed. DD was just having a horrible morning. We got in a huge fight, I brought her to school, but on my way home I realized what she must be going through and knew she wouldn't be very productive that day so I turned around and picked her up. I did the same for DS under similar circumstances.

Sometimes a break just can't wait until the weekend IMO.

Well, I'm sure, he (not you) could just explain that he (not you) was driving his sick kid to a specialist in Indianapolis when someone blew their horn.

Hopefully he (not you) enjoys the boat very much.

Years ago, before I had any vacation time accumulated, I did call in "sick" to go golfing. That's about it for my "wild" side. :p

yep and let my kids have them too. I'm not too worried about having to provide an attendance sheet at the Pearly Gates. Matter of fact if I didn't have those awesome Ferris day's, I may or may not have lost it long ago sending me the other direction of those gates lol

Yep!

In HS I would routinely have my older brother call in a be our father, saying I did not feel well and was not going to make it. This was in the 80's long before any tracking or monitoring via computer. For some reason my parents never looked at the absences column on my report card and thought it was suspicious! I did call my dad a few times a month with cramps asking to go home... I knew better than to call my mom! Dad would agree to anything as long as he did not have to discuss the issue. LOL

I did not graduate with honors or even high grades, but I was a solid B student! :rolleyes1

My kids never even had a chance at cutting class with all of the emails, robo calls and info on the net about their whereabouts. :magnify:

As an adult, I see no reason NOT to take a personal day for whatever I need to do. Sometimes that is just being alone.

I just realized today that I have been a mother longer than I have not been a mother. It feels weird. Honestly, it feels old. And I am taking a day off it needed, I have earned it!

After the dreadful day that I had yesterday and so far today, I would do anything to have a Ferris Bueller day today. Except I want to do it completely alone.

When I was in high school I took a day off to hang out with friends (I went to a private school and had a different vacation week then theirs). When I showed back up at the school to catch the bus home I was warned that I got caught because my mom called to dismiss me. She said she had forgotten I had a dentist appointment. Got home, expecting the worse but she just laughed about it. Said I didn't have an appointment, just thought she would dismiss me so we could go shopping and out to lunch. :rotfl:
She never did tell my dad (although he knows now and we still laugh about it), but the nuns never put two and two together about my absence the day before. :rolleyes1

I skipped school one day when I was in High School. Walked the 2 miles from the High School into the small town to go shopping, eat lunch, and go to the thrift store, used book store and craft store. I figured I'd walk back to school and arrive just in time to catch the bus home which is what I did.

Who did I see but my Aunt who found a pay phone, called my Mother and told her. I didn't know she called my Mother until I got home from school that afternoon.
I had to clean the chicken coop by myself for a month as punishment. Never did that again! :scared:

As an adult, I just took time off work when I wanted - we could do that as long as our work was completed so I never felt like I was goofing off.
