Anybody ever get rid of the dishwasher and go back to hand washing?

Our dishwasher (a portable one) broke one year ago and we haven't got around to getting it fixed. I would like to put in a permanent one instead, but that means electrical and plumbing costs since there is no room next to the sink. I really miss having a dishwasher and I think it's important to have one when we sell the house.

I love having a dishwasher, and can't imagine not having one even though our kids are grown and gone and it's just DH and I in the house again, but...

DH's mother stopped using their dishwasher after all the kids were gone and eventually she had it taken out, and DH built cabinets for her in the space, that perfectly matched her kitchen cabinets. You would never know that space had ever held a dishwasher.

One thing I don't have now, that we did have when the kids were home, is a garbage disposal. I enjoyed having it, but really don't miss it. Except in the winter when I have to trudge out to the garden to get rid of potato peelings, spoiled leftovers from the frig, etc. But any other time I really don't mind putting stuff out to the garden, for compost.

In our old house we had a new dishwasher that had a garbage disposal in it so no prewashing or even rinsing was required. As long as you didn't overlod, it worked great. It used to drive me crazy when I went to DMILs and she would practically wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. (What's the point?:confused3) Now in our current house the dishwasher isn't as good as the other one, so we do have to rinse first.

I don't care, I wouldn't be without it. I wash pans and a few dishes, but my dishwasher is here to stay.

I wish I had the time to handwash. Our dishwasher is awful. It was new when we bought the house. It's not the basic one but a step down from the best Kenmore they offered. I have had the builder's special and one that was probably 10 yrs old, both worked better than this one. We have to pre-wash everything and even then somehow something still gets on it. I've tried every different concoction to get things clean from powders to gels to tabs, different rinse-aids, etc. I still get residue on my dishes. There are 6 people in the family and I'm babysitting right now. We are running the dishwasher at least once a day, sometimes twice. I really wish I had the time to handwash.

Are you nuts!!!!!

We never rinse of our dishes before putting them in a dishwasher.

There are 6 of us in the family so no way would i give it up.:scared:

Me either!!! I take a paper towel and just get the food off and into the garbage. I can't understand why people clean their dishes before putting in the dishwasher.

I would NEVER think of not using my dishwasher. I use it every night and sometimes twice a day on a weekend.

I would find handwashing dishes a BIG waste of my time when I can have a machine do it for me.

Though I do really enjoy my dishwasher (and it's run typically once a day during the week and twice on the weekends) I do still like ocassionally washing dishes by hand.

I think it's because I don't *have* to wash them by hand that I enjoy it more, kwim? ;)

We just replaced our dishwasher in November and I'm very happy with our new one. :)

I would never buy a house that didn't have a dishwasher in it.

We had trouble with our one year old Kenmore......getting deposits back on dishes/in glasses. Turned out the blade that is supposed to chop up the food down in the bottom was broken and not working. Maybe you have dirt/food that needs cleaning out down in the bottom and it is coming back up on your dishes......of course if it NEVER worked than that is not the problem. Ours is fantastic overall and a dishwashwer is as important as the washing machine to me.

there is no way I would ever do dishes by hand. My mom got her first dishwasher in 1951, & I have always used one since.

I do not prerinse, just flick off any garbage into the disposal, just load & push the button. Even if some dishes don't get washed for a few days when I don't have a full load, they still come out squeaky clean. Far cleaner than I could do by hand. I never could put my hands in water that hot.

I would never buy any dishes or pans that couldn't be washed in the dishwasher, so that is not a problem.

Yeah, this. I cannot imagine opting to wash by hand. Gross! :scared:

I very rarely use my dishwasher. I don't mind doing the dishes by hand at all. I hate emptying the dishwasher.

I don't wash any of our dishes by hand.
Not a one!
Rarely do I have dishes that don't come out spotless on the first run. Worst case, a second run always cleans them right up.

I cannot imagine being tied to the sink to wash dishes. I hate loading and unloading the dishwasher, I can't imagine if I had to hand wash the dishes! We'd become a paper plate family for sure.

I have a portable Danby. Everything I've heard says using the dishwasher is more environmentally friendly. I definitely believe it. My portable one empties out a 1/4 of a sink full of water for any load, whether its service for four or a huge roasting pan. I would HAVE to use way more than that in order to do them by hand.

I would never give up the dishwasher..thems fightin words dare...

my dishwasher is an old basic washer...nothing but the turn style setting knob and the lock. it does a really good job on getting my dishes clean.

I had a brand new dishwasher in our previous house and it broke after 12 months. bought another dishwasher...same thing..broke.

maybe the older models last longer??:confused3

oh how I wish I had a dishwasher :( we rent and the kitchen is TINY so as much as I'd love one and can afford one...there's no room for one. I absolutely hate doing dishes so we use paper plates most of the time except for real meals that won't work on them like pasta, etc. I seriously dream of moving to a place with a bigger kitchen and a dishwasher lol
