Anybody else with fine hair???

I wanted to give another thumbs up to Big Sexy Root Pump Plus -- it's a godsend! I have fine hair, which is thick at the nape, thin at the crown AND I have a HUGE melon. So needless to say I have to have volume or risk looking like Skeletor-head. Nothing worked, and I mean nada. I'd go get my hair cut, have some stylist swear they could make the volume stay. It would look great for 30 minutes and then it would flatten and get fly-away. Root pump plus completely does the job :)

I have to disagree about the layers being bad for thin and fine hair. Whenever I've had a stylist make the grave mistake of cutting out my layers (or my layers gets too long), I look horrid.

I also have found that using a flat brush and a dryer works "kinder" for smoothing my fine hair then a flat iron -- less...well, weird lifeless flat, stays soft and shiny.

I also really recommend that you use a concentrater attachment (looks kind of like a duck bill) when using your hair dryer to style. Gets tons of lift and straightening while REALLY reducing the flyaways. Plus you just can style a lot faster. Always always finish each section with a blast of cold air (helps to have a hair dryer that has a button on the handle you can easily push for this without having to fiddle between settings)

The best thing I will say that seems to combat stringiness is just flat out getting regular hair cuts. But using that flat brush while you're drying your hair can also help cut down the clumping.

I also only wash my hair every other day (or it dries out), and always use a conditioner. A lot of women with fine hair try to avoid conditioner thinking it weighs down their hair, but all it will do is ultimately make it brittle. And while volumizing shampoo is tempting, just remember many can be very drying.

I have 3 hair products that I love :lovestruc

*Big Sexy Hair: Root Pump Plus (looks like an air horn)
---it holds up through humidity and gives you all day volume.

*Fekkai: Pink Color Mask (I forget the whole name of it)
---softens the damage on the end and gives incredible shine.

*Garnier Fructis: Blow Dry Perfector
---my new fave for everyday!! it keeps my hair soft, shiny, a little volume, and no need to flat iron!! I already hooked 2 girls at work on it and I've only had it a week!!

I have really fine thinning hair and right now am debating whether or not to cut it. It's to the middle of my back and I love it long but it really feels like it's too heavy because the crown is so flat, which is where it's thinning. Sadly I have hereditary thinning hair and way too much stress on top of that but I've found that the redkin stuff for thining hair really works. I switched from Nioxin and saw new growth with in a month. It sounds like the Sexy Hair root pump is a must try?!

I use Trader joes sulfate free shampoos- (tried whole foods,Panetne, they were too heavy and gross)
The cheapest one is 2.99 per bottle, but it's a little drying,IMO- I use the step up from there, which is orange scented and costs 3.99 per bottle-:thumbsup2 I love TJ's hair stuff,it's natural, and inexpensive, and doesn't weigh down my fine hair

I was just looking at these last night...... I saw the orange stuff and it smelled yummy!

I have very fine, thin hair. I get it cut slightly above my shoulders and with just a few layers around the bottom for movement. Anymore than that, and my hair looks even thinner. I color my hair, so that helps to give it some texture, but I also use Big Sexy Blow Up Gel Foam (love this stuff) or B&B thickening cream. I have to use the B&B product sparingly, otherwise my hair feels gummy.

I have very fine thinning hair and have tried so many different things. For me the best have been living proof mousse-I buy it at Ulta or Sephora and Kenra volumizing hair spray. The hairspray holds well but is not heavy to weigh hair down-it helps to volumize to as I can spray and fluff my hair and it will stay.I have a very sensitive scalp and alot of things irritate it and I can't use them. Most root volumizing sprays bother me.I have tried the living proof thickening cream but I didn't like that.

the dermatologist did say that rogaine for women really does work for most women....i have to start using it.

I have really fine hair but there's a LOT of it. It's really thick. I don't have a problem with volume as long as I have the right haircut. I keep it longish (a few inches below shoulders) and with many layers, especially around the face. I know it's time for a cut when it starts feeling flat on top and big on the bottom, like a heavy triangle!

I do not enjoy having fine hair. It won't hold curl. Bobby pins don't work, so I have a hard time with cute hair styles. I even wanted to try a ponytail with a little poof (the bang bump  ) up top but even teasing it doesn't make it poof up!

I am going to look at the Big Sexy root spray b ut I think that I need a better shampoo. Does anyone use the Big Sexy shampoo or conditioner?

Yes, I use them both. I love the whole Big Sexy line. I can't believe the difference in volume when I don't use it. I use the root pump, shampoo & conditioner daily. I've also used the Volumizing Blow Dry Gel.

I use Big Sexy products too. The EXTRA volumizing shampoo is amazing. I also use the root pump. As a girl of the 80's I still struggle when my hair looks too flat. :lmao:[/QUOTE]

Me, too! :rotfl:

For those of you who use the heat protection spray - do you use it instead of or with another styling product? I was thinking of trying it but don't want my hair to get weighed down by too many products.

I have thin, limp hair but a decent amount of it. I second the other suggestions of velcro rollers, coloring hair (or highlights), and drying hair upside down. I also use a round brush with a metal barrel that heats up when using a blowdryer for extra volume and a bit of a curl.

Getting a good haircut is a must for me. Without one, all the products and styling techniques are worthless.

It helps when the stylist has thin hair, too. I've been dealing with thin hair for almost 40 years and thought I'd learned every trick, but my current stylist has thin hair, too, and has a few cutting techniques he uses that really give my hair body. I don't know what they're called, but I think they give my hair movement and texture. I told him he is never allowed to move, quit, or retire. :)

have fine hair is a lot of it but so fine looks good then once humidty hits it boom flat as a pancake... perm is the best for my hair but no one wears them any more so just keep fighting this straight stuff. to much product makes it worse and to much hairspray makes it even worse.

I've always said that if I ever meet a genie, my first wish will be for thick hair! Since I haven't come across any abandoned genie lamps yet, I have a few tricks I use for my "noodle hair" (as my mom calls it)...

Highlight! It's amazing (and sad) what a difference damaging my hair with peroxide makes to the volume! I highlight it about 4-5 times a year (not as often as my stylist would like, but that's all my pocketbook can afford!).

Tigi Sessions Sea Salt Spray... After towel drying my hair, I apply sea salt spray and a little gel, then blowdry with a large, round brush.

It's still not perfect, but at least I can get through most days without it looking too stringy...

Another vote here for highlighting. It really seems to give body to fine hair. Also, you may come to notice that, as you gradually get more gray hair, your gray hair has more body--there has to be a positive side to everything, right?

I have fine hair and use a product by Big Sexy called "Powder Play." It is amazing if you want some poof on your crown. It's a powder that you sprinkle in your hair near the crown, then tease in sections. Big Sexy just came out with it about 3-4 years ago.

In fact, at our family pictures my 50 yr old uncle asked if I had a "bump it" in my hair. I said "no, but that is a huge compliment for me." :rotfl2: Before Powder Play, my hair was always flat to my head.

I had used Kenra's root booster, but it left so much buildup.

I also only wash every other day. The second day is a little iffy (my roots at the crown tend to start getting oily) but use the Powder Play for some oomph and put my hair up in some fashion--messy bun, cute ponytail, front and sides pulled back. The powder almost feels like sand in your hair, so it takes the oiliness away. Powder Play has changed my life! Paul Mitchell makes something similar called "Dust It."

Someone else asked but no one answered, so I will ask again,
where do you buy the Big Sexy products?

I am curious too, I have never heard of this product before and would love to try it. I have baby fine dirty blond hair, those who have it know what it's like to be cursed with this hair.

One thing I have noticed a difference with my hair is how I use conditioner. I used to think conditioner was the devil and very rarely used it, especially on my roots. One day I was in the shower and really massaged the conditioner all over my head and concentrated on my scalp. My hair seemed so much happier and looked fuller that day and has been ever since. I now no longer think conditioner is the devil and use it like this everyday.

I am a hair stylist AND I have fine hair. The key to getting a style to stay is grit, grit, grit. I use bumble and bumble products.

After you shampoo with thickening shampoo and conditioner (yes conditioner)
apply Surf Spray. Dry. After you dry apply some Does It all Spray all over. If this isn't enough you may want to add Hair Powder before the Does It All. Curl and style as desired and finish with hairspray.

Now given your hair isn't going to "feel" nice. If you want it to stay and feel nice that's pretty hard to achieve with fine hair. Can't win um all :)

I have seen Big Sexy at Target and CVS. I buy it through my hair stylist (best friend since kindy) at what she gets it for at cost.:lovestruc

Also, I have been told to put the conditioner on the ends of my hair up to about half the length of my hair. Supposedly the conditioner travels up the hair shaft, so it is unneccesary to coat your entire head. This will help with your roots not getting oily after only 24 hours, but your hair is still conditioned.

I have very fine hair and use bumble and bumble products. They may seem expensive but I use such a small amount that they last quite a while. I like the surf spray as a base if I need to style my hair to give it some texture. If I want a lot of texture, I believe the product is actually called texture. I used to used it on the roots to give volume. Now I am more of a hair in a pony tail kind of person so that works for me.

I found going to a salon that specializes in bumble and bumble and getting them to style it how I normally would with the products that I wanted worked well so I knew it could be done.

Also Washing your hair less often and using conditioner only on the ends will help a bit as well.
