Anybody else hate driving on the highway/interstate?

Does anybody else hate driving on the highway/interstate? I avoid it at all costs. I guess as I have gotten older I have a phobia about it, I dont know why... I have driven on it, but if I can get to where I am going going with the regular streets , that is how I get there. Mostly it takes me an extra 10-15 minutes longer to get to where I am going. It just gives me great anxiety thinking I may have to drive on it. People think Im crazy

You're not crazy. I won't drive on the highway either. I truly dislike driving that fast and I feel like I have no control over the car. Plus...well, the way other people drive around here...

No problem if I'm in the passenger seat, but I just can't do the driving myself.

Where we live, we have choice of hopping on highway & going up few exits or going through center of town. Regular roads have more you have to pay attention to with kids riding bikes, cars pulling in and out of side streets, animals ....

Highway is much easier.

Give me an interstate over any other road anyday of the week. I know exactly how to get from home to the nearest interstate going in any direction. I'll take freeflowing traffic and 70 mph over 25-55 with stop lights every 50 feet.

It all depends where I'm going.

If it's anywhere north of us (as in Northern Michigan, and the U.P.) I'm fine with it. Even though the speed limit is posted at 70, I set my cruise at 65 and rarely have to pull out to pass anyone. Let them all go around me, I don't care.

If I were to have to drive south of us, say to Detroit, then I would hate it. I hate driving anywhere I don't know where I'm going, whether it be on the freeway or just regular roads.

Yes same for me.. I dont mind being the passenger, but driving on the highway scares me..,expecially when I can see cars entering the freeway from the ramp..it just makes me sooooooo nervous, expecially if I am in the right lane. I am one of those people who likes to be in the correct lane, like if I know I am getting off on the right side of the street I stay in the right lane..If I am getting off on the left side, then I stay in left lane...

I love driving on the highway. I learned to drive on the highway, actually. It was easier for me as a learner because I learnt how to control the car better. I've always been a speed demon when it came to cars so of course I love going fast.

I love the highway. Around here, I think I can count the number of turns there are in a 100 mile stretch on one hand. Plus my fuel milage plummets in stop and go traffic, and I find it to be generally annoying.

I will say that the highways around downtown Chicago used to make me very nervous, but once you drive on them a few times and know where you're going, it's fine.

Even so, I'd prefer the people who don't like the interestate to take side streets then drive 45 mph on the highway! That's like a death wish around here

My mom hates it and it annoys the crap out of me.

Sunset highway to get to my work= 15 minutes.
Other common ways to get to my work= 35+ minutes.

That's 20 minutes of sleep, so highway it is.

Also, I'm a true Oregonian used to Oregonian driving. Driving on the highway in many other places generally makes me nervous because they're all crazy drivers outside of Oregon, we have a name for them here too... Californians, or People from Washington, depending on their license plate. lol.

I prefer the highway as well. Where I grew up, it was down the block, take a right, then left at the light and onto the highway to go downtown or north to the mall. I could have taken side streets, but it would take twice as long, with many more stops, and much more hassle.

If its just me, especially here where the majority of drivers are absoultely crazy, I will take the back roads. If we go on a long trip I dont mind so much. I flipped a 76 Honda Civic on the freeway when I was 19, Ive been a little leery of it since.

I prefer the highways and interstates because I can get where I'm going, but I have a fear of heights that seems to have gotten worse over the years, particularly when I'm driving on high flyovers or bridges. I don't panic, but my heart races and I get VERY nervous, particularly when the guardrails are not that high and I can see over them.

I don't mind freeway driving despite the discourteous San Diego drivers (especially BMW owners). Believe it or not, drivers in Los Angeles are much more courteous than in SD. Maybe they've learned their lesson from all of the freeway shootings!

I am fine with any kind of driving (not crazy about trying to get around after dark in a rainstorm due to glare, but I won't specifically avoid it). It is surprising to me how many people I know- mostly women- who are afraid of or just uncomfortable with driving on the interstate. A few friends can't believe I will hop in the car and drive 8 1/2 hours to WDW with no problems- they think it is terrifying!

I love to drive period. I even enjoy driving in NYC. Most of all I enjoy driving my 6 speed Wrangler.

Hi Sunlver!

I spent many, many, many hours in Va. Beach, as I grew up in Hampton Roads. I understand your fear, I always avoided the '64s' (264, 664, 64, etc.) in the area like the plague around 4:30 pm on weekdays. My mom is still in the area and as far back as I can remember, she always avoided the interstates and still does -- unless someone else is driving. Having lived in the DC metro, the northeast, and Atl. for a few years each though, before settling in the south, I feel like I can take on anything traffic-wise now.
