I am truly sorry if this has already been posted. I have not been on the DIS in a long time and do not know how long this has been on the VMK homepage.

I decided to go on VMK today, and when I got to the homepage, I noticed that the two characters were saying different things. Then I noticed HOW they were saying them!

I don't know about anybody else, but using "u" instead of "you" REALLY bugs me. Also, it bothers me when people forget to use the apostrophe in words like "can't" and "I'm".

Is this new language used on VMK homepage bug anybody else??:confused3

No this is Text speak and normal in todays age, I was even reading i think in the netherlands on state english test this is considered acceptable and no loss in grade for useing u for you and r for are and all the other txt spk

Yes, it bugs me too. :( My grammar and spelling isn't always completely correct, but at least I try.

Although, there are times when I can see the use (and do) for thru or plz. :)

Bugs me too... As if they are suggesting that it's the right way to talk.

I was bothered when Haley said.. Well it's his job to serve us... I thought that was rude (refering to Gator Waitor...)

While VMK is probably trying to be 'realistic' as to how people talk in VMK, using all that slang isn't teaching anybody anything, except to be lazy. I mean, how hard is it to type 'I'm', rather than 'im'? A couple extra keystrokes, and you look ten years more mature. Sorry if I'm offending anybody who does it a lot, this is not an attack on you personally, I simply can't stand it.

I agree that I don't like it either. I get that it's the "text speak" or whatever, but I don't think a lot of people realize that because people have gotten so "lazy" in terms of actually spelling out the actual word, that their spelling and grammar have become affected by it in real life. Is it like that for everyone? No, of course not. But I come across so many kids and even teens who spell just like they do via instant messenger or what have you because it's acceptable there. Case in point, I have an aunt who is in her 40s and she sent me a letter that spelled the word "would" as "wud" and "anybody" as "nebody". WHAT?! A grown woman is so used to using text speak that now her letters are just insane.

Txt spk is fstr thn ne othr spk.

They do that to save time and they so often write, type, and think that way it has crept in to every thing we as a people do today. I can see the next presidential campigne nebody vote 4 her got 0wnd and things like that.

I first read this during the whole Yavngate thing (promising quest info, etc).

I read all these posts saying that Yavn really doesn't have to do all of this for us, etc. I then go onto the VMK homepage and catch the latter part of the quote:

"Well, it's like his job to serve us!"

For a split second, I thought she was referring to Yavn.

Once you think of it from that perspective, you'll realize that those two virtual monstrosities are biting the hand that created them.

Saves time...like a whole few seconds? No one can convince me that spelling it "text" instead of "txt" is really all that time saving. ;)

I'd be curious to hear what a teacher might say about this text speak. Any teacher care to voice his/her opinion? Are you seeing this in your student's written work? If so, do you accept it, or do you correct your students when they do it?

My opinion: it's a shame Disney is promoting it.

Whenever my DD is on VMK and I see her doing this I make her correct it. I don't mind thx for thanks as there are times when you want to say it at the end or begining of a game before you switch rooms.

The ones I loathe the most: wat for what, u, r. I can't think of the others right now.

The one thing I do like is that words that can't be written in this manner must be spelled correctly or VMK does not accept them.

It's not saving me time when I have to sit there and decipher what the person is saying.

I notice that most of the time when I do use some text speak, that it takes me longer to type it because I have to sit and think about how to spell it.

I personally despise this sort of chat speak. Particularly 'plz.'

The worst is when it's included in a player-made quest. Last week I was playing a quest where one of the questions was "What does yw stand for?" I sat there saying "you're welcome" every way I could think of until I slapped my forehead and typed "your welcome." Then I said, "Hey owner, it's spelled 'you're welcome!'" and got booted from the room :lmao:

I wonder if that's the same quest I played because I remember a question like that and it wouldn't accept "you're welcome" as an answer. I wanted to smack the owner. :surfweb:
