Hello!

Welcome to Hood! I just moved here in April. We lived on post for a few months while our house was being built. We bought the next town over in Copperas Cove. I have lots of information on the area so let me know what you need.

I'm Katie 28 married to Dwayne 34.

Thanks for your reply! How do you like Ft Hood?
We are looking at rental homes in Harker Heights, is that a nice area? How far is it from Ft Hood?
Its Just DH and myself but we want a house in a nice area. We are going to rent for a year and then buy(if we are going to be there for awhile).
What is the housing like on post? It appears on the Ft Hood website that the housing is old.
We live on post right now and the houses here are brand new and gorgeous!

I came from NY so for me it is very different, I don't love it but I don't hate it, its a much slower pace here & I am trying to adapt. Dwayne is from East Texas so he is used to the area. It is very hot here in the summer and gets very dry but coming from GA you are probably used to heat. The job market is not great, there are lots of programs to help you find a job but they pay really low. I went back to school to become a massage therapist.

The on post housing is very old our house we had was from the 1950's, there is also a long wait (DH was coming off a year tour in Korea so we got right in), I was also waiting for my house to sell in NY and the new one to be built. It served its purpose. There is some new housing but most of that seems to be for bigger families 3-4 bedrooms. We had a 2 bedroom, 1 bath.

To me Harker Heights is a bit far. DH likes to come home at lunch (he is deployed right now), there is a back entrance to post he uses. You are probably looking at a 20 minute commute depending on where you are in HH. If you stay in Killeen make sure its south of 190, Copperas Cove is nice (thats where I am), Harker Heights is more expensive because of higher taxes so we didn't look to buy there. Be advised there is alot of traffic.

The good points! We are an hour from Austin, love the city! New outlets just opened (with a Disney Store Outlet), housing prices are cheap. We bought a duplex, 3 bedrooms & 2 baths on each side. My Mom rents half. We are about 4 years from retirement (20 yrs) CANNOT WAIT! I do not have any children but DH does from a previosu marriage, they live in Alaska with their Mom.

Hmmmm...anything else please ask I would love to help.

Thanks so much for the information!
I am looking at rentals in either Harker Heights or Copperas Cove - they both look pretty good.
Just out of curiousity, when will your DH redeploy? I am asking because I am wondering if my DH is going to deploy as soon as we get there.....:confused3
If you don't feel comfortable answering that here could you pm me please?
I have no idea what batallion will be assigned to. He will be the CSM in an aviation battalion, but thats all we have been told.
thanks again for the info - I may be asking some more questions the closer we get to moving.

My Dad is stationed here and we have lived here for 2 yrs. We live in Kuma village and there are lots of new 2 bedroom townhouses that are very nice. We live in a old 4 bedroom. This is our second time here. My dad just got back from Iraq and will be going back next Nov. Unfortunately he is gone alot from here. I am getting married soon and will be out of the military life.

Fort Hood is about my favorite place we have lived and we have lived all over the world.

Welcome!

hi to everyone. my sonin law is back from iraq. he got leave to come home on dec. 20 and he , my dd and my 8 month old grandson are leaving in 2 days, jan. 2 to go back to fort hood. my dd has lived here since having our grandson. they will be living on base, im not sure the name of it though. i cant belive that the time came so fast for them to mve. we have our grandson over every day,and he sleeps here alot. hes been here the last 3 nights. so we have one more day then they move., i know its exciting for them , but im trying to keep my worries to myself. i cant believe they will be out of state. i know i will talk to my ddeveryday, but not being able to see them is gonna kill me......i know though it will be all right, we just have to get used to it. i know all the families going through this ,its tough. so please say a prayer and keep my family and every one elses in your thoughts.thanks
