My husband won a kindle at a work contest and we'd really like to have the Kindle Fire so we have the tablet capabilites as well. Of course it was out of the budget before but now that he wond this, I am wondering if there is anyway to return it somewhere for store credit towards the Kindle Fire.

Sorry if these are dumb questions but are Kindles only sold on Amazon? If so, does Amazon allow "gift" returns without receipts like B&M stores do?

TIA for any insight

Target sells them. You might try saying it was a gift and you want to trade it in, but I think you need a reciept.....always possible to get store credit. :confused3

Target has a trade in program, however you aren't going to get full retail value. If your goal is to return it for full store credit at a store you didn't purchase it from, well that's something different.

Thanks guys, trust me, I was not looking for something for nothing...I just thought we have this brand new thing and if we can get some credit for it towards an upgrade, that would be better.

I had no idea the other places carried them, I googled and, of course, everything was Amazon.

thanks again for the recommendations!

Pretty sure Target quit carrying them. Best Buy does still have them, Office Max might have them also. You might be able to get store credit without a receipt, if it's still sealed in the package.

You may have a big problem if you try the return and exchange route as the stores scan the serial number and can tell if it was from there or not. Pretty much the only options you have are to trade it in at Bestbuy or somewhere with a trade in program but you probably won't get full credit for it, or sell it on Amazon or some other selling site.

Thanks guys, since I had no experience, just wasn't sure what might be possible.

It is PERFECTLY possible so long as you have not had the one that your DH won for over 30 days, and if you have not registered it yet.

I had the same thing happen; I won one of the basic Kindles with ads, and I preferred the Fire. When I won it I was quite pleased, but I took it back home without opening it. Then I called Amazon and explained the situation, and asked what I could do to get the Fire instead.

While they do not "trade", per se, they did allow me to return the original Kindle for Amazon store credit against the purchase price. (They can tell exactly what the purchase price was by the serial number of the unit, which is printed on the outside of the packaging.) They sent me a mailing label and I sent it on back to them ($5 charge for the return ship), and when the credit appeared on my account, I used the credit plus a charge against my Amazon card to buy a Fire instead. There was free shipping on my Fire, so it balanced out. I had also won a $50 gift card along with the original Kindle, so I ended up paying less than $75 out of pocket for the Fire.

Sell the kindle on craigslist and then put that money towards the kindle fire.
There was a link on slickdeals for a refurbished kindle fire gen 1 for $85.

Well you won't have a "big" problem, they will just tell you they can't take it back because it wasn't purchased from them. I would contact Amazon and explain what you'd like to do, see if they can help.

Sell it on ebay. I sold a brand new nook on eBay and made almost retail price, I also included free shipping so it sold pretty quickly.

REALLY?

I would buy one for that price!
