Any vegetarians out there? We just saw "Food, Inc." and DH wants to turn vegetarian. We're mostly vegetarian already... but after seeing that movie, I think that takes the cake. I'd love to hear from other veggie disers!! :goodvibes

Veggie here... 21 years now :thumbsup2 DD is as well; she is 5 years meat-free. :cool1:

About five months, now, my wife and I, vegetarians, we are. :yoda:

Count me in! Almost 3 years now, trying to get to vegan but having a hard time, being Irish got to put a little drop of milk in my tea!!!!

WOW! Have you guys found it hard to eat out or at parties/weddings?

Yes! Although I live in a reasonably vegetarian-friendly place (a university town), it can still be hard to find decent food when I eat out. I'm not a fan of mushrooms or fake meat, which seem to be the vegetarian options in too many restaurants. And the chain restaurants generally can't tell you what's vegetarian and what's not!

Re: weddings, I live in the South where most reception food consists of wedding cake and non-alcoholic punch. ;) The last reception I attended that served "real food" had plenty of vegetarian options.

When I'm going to eat at the homes of new friends who don't know I'm vegetarian, I generally say some thing like, "I'm vegetarian so if you don't mind I'll bring my own veggie burger to your bar-b-q" or something like that. I much prefer eating out to eating at other people's houses though so I generally will suggest restaurants that I know have some veggie dishes I like.

Bringing your own is a GREAT idea!!

i'm not a vegetarian but married into a family with LOTS of them, my kid's school is vegetarian (as far as any food provided/consumed on campus, field trips or associated events), and ds returns today from a week at a summer camp thats strictly vegetarian.

just want to say that there are lots of great vegetarian cookbooks out there as well as some great products if you miss the texture of meat in certain dishes (i've found that when i feed certain traditional dishes dishes done up vegetarian to non vegetarians they concede it tastes the same but it's the texture that clues them in-things like chili, and "meat sauce" so i've tried some of the faux meat products and they've worked out fine).

one resource for cookbooks, materials on vegetarianism and products is the adventist book centers (you can go on-line and see if one is near you or they sell items on-line as well). seventh day adventists practice vegetarianism as part of their beliefs and because they are huge into the health field they have great information on how to stucture and prepare meals in the most healthy manner.

i think it's great that more main stream grocery chains are selling vegetarian products but their prices can still be pretty high-if you are into certain products you can get a better price on them by purchasing/ ordering from a place that buys them in larger quantities (and as is the case with the adventist centers you can take advantage of fairly regular case sales so you can stock up and save big $$$).

I'm not but my MIL is. MIL has been a vegetarian for years! I also have a friend who is a vegetarian and she also brings the meatless burgers/hot dogs to family bbq's.

Now for my MIL, she uses the veggie ribs at bbq's. She LOVES them!!!

No but my youngest son has been an ovo-lacto-pescetarian for 8 years now, he is only 16 and is insulin dependent.

He eats fish, eggs and some cheese but avoids all animal products including gelatin, jello etc

He mainly lives on wild salmon, fruit and veggie pizza and has no problems finding this food in the theme parks.

The rest of us eat meat but buy freerange or conservation grade meat from local farms

I was a vegetarian for 12 years including during my pregnancy. My DD didn't eat meat or dairy until she was 4. Unfortunately, we fell off the wagon.

Recently we all became vegans. We do not consume any oil either and we eat a very low sodium diet with no processed foods. I have never felt better and the rest of the family feels the same way. Best thing we have ever done and I hope to continue this lifestyle permanently.

Another vegetarian! :goodvibes

I have been a vegetarian for 13 years. DH is not a vegetarian but eats veggie the majority of the time.

We enjoy cooking and make a lot of different recipes all the time. My favorite source for recipes is http://www.allrecipes.com It has an advanced search that lets you check 'vegetarian' or 'vegan' when you search and type in specific ingredients which is nice.

Have been lucky in going to parties and get togethers since most people know I am vegetarian and have been very accomodating. Also since I've gone veggie two other people in my family have as well making it much easier for family get togethers.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I think I'm headed in that direction.

I love meat, I have no moral issues about eating meat, but just for a change I started cooking meatless meals, trying new veggies/beans, and I noticed that I feel better when my body doesn't have to digest meat.

I'll be checking out the other thread!:thumbsup2

I've been a vegetarian since 7th grade...over 25 years and counting! I don't consume any slaughter by-products (gelatin, rennet, etc.) and I also don't wear leather or certain wool products.

It's sometimes difficult to get a straight answer about whether dishes in restaurants are truly vegetarian. Some people consider chicken stock and oyster sauce to be "vegetarian" because there aren't pieces of chicken or oysters in the dish. Or, because so many people call themselves vegetarian, but then say "...but I eat fish" or "...but I gotta have a steak once a month" :rotfl:
