Since you are driving for the first time, I would use mapquest or some other online map directions closer to the time of travel in 2005.

Some things to do in Orlando:

Are you going to WDW? You'll need some tickets that allow for flexibility since you will be there so long. You could get park hopper plus passes or you could get annual passes, it just depends on how many days you will be visiting in the parks.
You will find the members on this board LOVE Disney World (me included) and would spend most of their time there because of so much to do at the parks. I'm going for 17 days this summer and will spend all but 2 days in the parks at WDW.

Are you going to Universal and Islands of Adventure? There are good tickets for that too.

You could go to Sea World too.

There is also Kennedy Space Center to visit.

You could go to the Atlantic Ocean beaches or to the Gulf of Mexico beaches.

There are many dinner shows to do. Some are at Disney like the Hoop de doo Review, the Luau at the Polynesian Resort, and character meals like Chef Mickey, The Crystal Palace with Pooh and friends, and others.

There are other dinner shows not at Disney like Arabian Nights and Dolly Parton's new show and some others.

There are water parks at Disney and off site.

There are lots of putt-putt golf areas and shopping everywhere.

There's so much to do you will not get bored, but you will need to do lots of reading to decide what to do and what you wouldn't enjoy.

Go to the Orlando Visitors Bureau home page. There you can request a free map as well as an Orlando "Magic" card. This you can use for various discounts OUTSIDE of WDW. (restaurants, hotels, etc.)
