Friends are staying at the Fort Wilderness Cabins in November. Can you offer any tips about the cabins, "in-between hours" food options or early a.m. transportation?

Thanks,
penny

If you have a rental or your own car, I would encourage you to use it instead of the buses. We haven't stayed there in a couple years, but it used to be a little bit more trouble than other resorts to take the bus because you take an interior (campground) bus to a main waiting station to get to where you are going. So it one extra step and takes a little more time. You can try to catch the ferry boat to MK, but again this takes a little more time.

There are many groceries available at the store in the campgrounds, probably more than any other resort on property. I would take advantage of that store or go off property to another grocery store and stock your kitchen for breakfast.

Good luck:wave:

You might want to post this question to those on the camping forum.

We have stayed at FW on many occassions. We find it a very relaxing resort where we can escape the hectic parks. Though many have had things to say about the transportation we have never had a problem with it. In fact the last few times we went I dont think we waited more then 10 minutes. Do take into consideration that in the mornings it will be busy because everyone is doing the same thing you are, so give yourself a little extra time. We always alot ourselves an hour to go anywhere on property.

Some do like the convenience of the golf carts but they can get expensive. If you decide to do that you need to call the bike barn now to reserve a cart. Many bring bikes along, especially for the children.

When planning meals think fast and easy. I wouldnt do anything that requires alot of prep work. There is a grill provided on the deck of your cabin. This is a great place to sit out and just enjoy the atmosphere. You might want to get some marshmellows or do smores.

Transportation works a bit differently within the woods. Because Fort Wilderness is so large and spread out, they run "Internal" buses throughout the campsites. These internal buses take you to the two main areas... the Settlement Depot (Pioneer Hall) and the Outpost Depot (check-in). Internal buses run every 10 minutes along three separate routes. Time spent on the internal bus will be minimal... 1-3 minutes typically. Once at the Settlement or Outpost, you transfer to the theme park bus.

There used to be a thread around here on tips about Fort Wilderness transportation... I'll see if I can dig it up, or maybe someone could find it for me.

Best advice though... READ THE SIGNS, and make sure you know where you're going. If a bus says "SETTLEMENT PURPLE" on it, that means that it is going to the Settlement along the Purple route. (there are maps at every stop) It's fairly simple.

If you ever get confused, just ask one of the bus drivers. The purple panted people can give you the best info. :)

As Grump92 mentioned you really should check out the camping forum. Even though the cabins are not really camping, that forum is where most of the discussions on Ft. W take place (camping or cabins). You will find a lot more info there.

I stayed there once. I can see how people can find it more restful than other resorts because you are much more isolated. You cannot walk to the restaurant or the store from the cabins (well you could but it would take a while). You are not allowed to use your car within the resort except to get to your cabin or campsite.

For food, as far as I can remember there was the Trail's End buffet up near the marina (opposite end of the park from the cabins) and you can get coffee and groceries at the meadows store (closest to the cabins).

I would definitely recommend picking up some groceries before arriving at Ft W.

Just to stress some useful things to bring to the cabins--salt, pepper, coffee, coffee filters, sweetener, and cups for the bathroom. I do not recommend shopping at the Trading Posts or Goodings at the Crossroads, but if transportation is available think folks would be happier buying groceries at Winn-Dixie (left when facing traffic lights leading into Crossroads) or the Publix or Walmart off 192.

We love FW!!!
