I'm very new at photography, but love it quite a bit. I just bought a Canon Eos Rebel XT & am a bit scared that I bit off a bit more than I can chew.

I've always had point & shoot cameras but I'm really looking forward to learning more about the art and was hoping that some of you pros could give a newbie a few tips......

Thanks & I Hope To Share With You All Soon! :wizard:

"Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. GREAT book!! I've read though it at least 1/2 a dozen times in the last 4-5 months. Best $20 I've spent.

Don;t be intimidated by it, it's only a machine.

What I did when I bought my first SLR was to leave it in Program AE mode most of the time, until I got reasonably comfortable with it, then started learning one new feature - just one - at a time. Program mode works almost exactly like full Auto mode, although I have always gotten much better pics in Program mode than in Auto mode with my Canon SLRs.

Just by stepping up from a P&S to an entry-level SLR, you will probably see at least a little improvement in your picture quality. As you get more comfortable with the camera, and learn more skills, you will see more and more improvement.

Just remember - there is knowing how to operate yoru camera, and there is knowing how to take a photograph. They are two different things, and one does not automatically lead to the other!

Read your owner's manual (why do so few people do that?) and then go out and shoot! Shoot, shoot, shoot! The best way to get comfortable with your camera is to use it. The more you shoot, the sooner you'll want to start exploring all the nifty things you can do with it. Start simple, in the program modes, then have some fun!
