Any Teachers out there?

I am at the point in my life where I really need to figure out what it is I want to do.

For several years I have been thinking of going back to school to get my teaching certification. A couple years ago I volunteered at a local Elementary school for their Summer reading program. I worked with 3rd and 5th graders and really enjoyed it. I also really want a job where I can have weekends off, yet still feel like I am doing something good that is helping others.

I'd love to hear about your job, whether you like it or not, what grade you teach, and any info or insight you have for me.

Hi

I am starting my 5th year as a substitute teacher and LOVE IT!! If you are thinking about teaching how about subbing first to give you an idea of what is involved. Where I live you need a college degree from a 4 yr. college program.

I love subbing but it has also taught me that I am not interested in having a classroom full time.....Teachers work harder than I want to

So I will continue subbing and let the regular teachers stay in the classroom

im going to school now to be a teacher...i have been working at a day care center for 2 years and this s ummer i was the head teacher in the 4 year old room..i love it, its crazy, but i love it

I am in my 11th year of teaching 4th grade, and can honestly
say I don't see myself ever doing any other career.
The job is not easy, but I've found nothing to be more
rewarding.

My wife is a teacher also, and the fact we are basically on
the same time and work schedule is wonderful.

My wife is a teacher, and at least in this state, the requirements are getting harder. A year of mentoring is now in the picture so a BS in Ed. is taking 5 or 6 years. In Ohio, you have to get a masters degree within a certain amount of years after you get your Bachelors degree. So you might want to give it a shot, because the board of Education changes the requirements all of the time. You might have to take the Praxis test too.

I agree with the subbing or get a job as an aide. I work as an aide in a middle school for learning support students. I was going to school for my elem. ed. certification when I got pregnant with my first. I obviously never finished. I honestly think I would have burned out in the lower grades. I think middle school teachers have a great gig -- teach the same lesson plan 5X per day. If the kids get on your nerves, they are walking out the door in 45 min.! I enjoy working with the older kids.

I taught jr. high for 15 years before leaving to stay home with my sons. My DH is also a teacher (high schl). It's a very fulfilling job that requires more work than most people imagine. It also requires creativity, patience and diplomacy. One of the perks, especially for my DSs, is that the breaks allow them a lot of time with their dad.

In middle schl. and jr. high, it may seem like you're teaching the same thing 5 times a day, but you're really not. Each class has its own personality and needs that must be addressed.

If you enjoyed the reading program, then I think you should seriously explore a certification program. You'll quickly discover if it's a fit for you. Good luck!

I teach high school English and I truly love my job. I am about to enter my 8th year. I can't tell you how rewarding these years have been. Of course, teaching is difficult and the workload is somtimes immense. I think teaching English demands alot because of all of the essays I am constantly grading. It is also nice to have the same holiday breaks as the kids and summers off with them.
