any suggestions for colic?

Both DD's were colicky. It was awful!

We used the vacuum cleaner - a lot! I am surprised that we didn't burn out the motor.

We also used the Mylicon drops. In addition, we had to switch her formula. We tried about 3 or 4 different ones before we hit the jackpot with Alimentum (it is very expensive though). We also switched her bottles to the Dr. Brown bottles. Much less air than with regular bottles. Good luck. It will pass even though it seems like it is never going to end.

My DD was colicky also. She screamed ALL THE TIME. The only time she slept is when she wore herself out and she would fall asleep for a couple hours from pure exhaustion, then she would wake up and it would start all over again. We tried everything suggested, Mylicon, baby carrier, dryer, car rides, vacuum cleaner, nothing worked. The ped. switched her to soy formula, which was OK for about 4-5 days then it started all over again. Then he switched her to Nutramigen, within 24 hours, it was like someone gave me a new baby. I couldn't believe it. When we took her out, people would go out of their way to tell me what a happy baby she was. I thought , if you only knew her at 2 months old. LOL The formula is twice as much as the regular and she is still on it. But for my sanity, it was worth every penny. If you need someone to talk to, PM me, sometimes it helps, Good Luck! I agree with COLIEBIRD, we also use Dr. Browns bottles.

Thanks guys --- we haven't tried the vacuum thing yet! May try that soon! Today has been a GREAT day ... and it was very busy! I went and got some of the gripe water early this am and it worked instantly! Yea!!!! Thanks for all the advice! I will certainly keep this thread handy and try these when we need them! :)

(I have to tell you guys this ... my poor dh, he told me today he thought the DIS boards were just for planning trips ... I told him nope, you can learn about anything on the CB board!) :)

Um, xanax would be for Mommy! Zantac is for baby! My Conner used Zantac too, it really worked wonders.

Just FYI, don't let your Dr. tell you your child can't have reflux just because he or she is "thriving"! Getting a correct diagnosis is crucial. DS never spit up, but he had really thin dry secretions in his nose. I didn't really think much of it, but this was his reflux!!!!

My heart goes out to you 2 out of my 3 had colic and here are my suggestions (most of them have been mentioned):

1. Dr Brown's Bottle are a must, worth every penny
2. Holding Conner by putting weight on his tummy (Jinxed method or similiar to a football but facing down- it was in the what to expect when your expecting book)
3. Lullaby CD's specifically made for fussy babies
4. Mylicon drops
5. Talk to your Dr. (I wish I would have pushed the issue with my first but people would say babies cry but not everyday all day!)
6. Motion-swing, vibrating bouncer, dryer, car

Good Luck!!!!

I would definitely suggest talking to your pediatrician about getting that formula changed to soy. Even another formula might be a better option for you. My son was BADDDDD from about a month to probably 4 or 5 months old. He'd cry daily from either 1-10 or 2 to 11. It was so bad and my husband was then working 3-11. The 2nd he'd walk in the door, I'd have to walk out just to keep from pulling my hair out. I know that sounds bad, but when you try everything you know of and all you can do is hear screaming for 8 - 9 hours a day, it grates on your nerves. I do not have him one time on video during that time where he did not start crying. I was a little older and I would NEVER do anything to harm my son, but with my experience I could easily see how a young mother could shake a baby to death if she had to deal with what I did. I'm not excusing these mothers at all, but I can understand and sympathize somewhat.

Anyway, everyone I'd ever talk to would always tell me, it's only going to get worse as they get older. I think I heard that 1000 times and I swore I'd have to smack anyone if I heard it one more time. I just want to say, if you're dealing with severe colic (and nothing worked well for us), there is nothing (outside of medical problems) that could possibly get worse! Once you're through it, the rest is a breeze. Well, at least till the preteen - teenage years if you have a daughter. LOL That's not really as bad either, but it's a whole set of other problems.

If nothing works, just hang in there. It does pass!

Another suggestion--fennel seed tea.

Take fennel seeds (McCormick/Schilling sells them in their premium collection) and sprinkle a few into just boiled water. Let the mixture for 5 minutes or so, then strain it into a bottle.

The liquid is slightly sweet, so babies love it. It worked wonders to soothe my son's "after-dinner fussy hour."

Actually was thinking of xanax for the mommy! There is little worse than having a miserable baby and not being able to help! Glad you are doing better!:)

I did use fennel seeds to some degree of success, too. Works for me too sometimes.

Then he switched her to Nutramigen,

My daughter was on this formula too. It was quite expensive 10 yrs ago, I can't imagine what it costs now. I called it liquid gold and would joke that she had a stomach of gold. She was on it for a year, even tried to get insurance company to pay for it because of the necessity, but they refused. But I guess now sometimes they will cover it because 5 years ago, my sister got her insurance to cover some of the costs.

YAY!! I'm so glad it worked!! We used to keep two bottles on hand at all time, one in the diaper bag one at home. It's great stuff!!

Hope all continues to be well! :wave2: :teeth:
