I am going to DLR at the end of the month with my dad and little sister (shes 8). My sister and I have the same mom, but different dads, so we dont have the same last name.

We will be traveling out of state (WA to CA) and I need to know if there are any special documents we should get or if we need a letter from our mom saying its ok to travel with her across state lines. I hadn't heard anything about this, but since I am not her guardian and she has a different last name than us, I want to make sure we arent caught unprepared when we get to the airport. Any info would help. Thanks!!

I would think there would be some sort of temporary guardianship paperwork you could get. At least get your Mom to sign something giving you temporary guardianship in case you needed medical help. I'd get a copy of the insurance card your sister is covered under, also, so that you have that just in case you need it.

Hopefully someone else can help you further. Here's a link to one I found online. You could just copy and paste the informatin into word and then have your mom complete and sign it.

we had a copy of our grandchildren's birth certificates.. and homeland security looked at them... so you might also want to get one of those for when you go through security.:goodvibes

I have traveled with my band students several times out of state for various activities and have never had to carry birth certificates for identification unless you are leaving the country. However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to carry a copy if you are worried.....or at least carry a school ASB card or student identification card for reference. Though I doubt you will be asked for any identification at security (usually only the adults are questioned)

However I very much agree with Mary above. It is very important to carry some type of letter or paperwork from your mom giving permission for your dad to seek out medical help if needed since he is not the guardian. He will not be able to seek out any medical help without it! I personally would not travel without it! You will also need a copy of the insurance card your sister is covered under. You never know when it might be needed. Emergencies happen.

We have our own emergency medical forms at school but I found this site you might take a look at it is almost identical to our form. http://www.rogerknapp.com/medical/permission.htm or try searching the internet. I know I have seen free travel forms as well.

Good luck and have fun!

I get the letter from my brother or sister authorizing me to have their children when I take them to WDW. I need the letter to authorize medical care. I ALSO take a copy of their insurance card with me so that if they do need medical care, I have all of their insurance info to give to the provider.

Thank you for all your helpful responses! For those of you who have brought letters, is a regular letter fine, or did you have to have it notarized?

Just a regular letter signed by both parents.

When I was younger I used to spend summers with my family in another state. My mother always had a notarized letter stating that X people were authorized to give medical care in her absence.

You are her biological sister. Don't worry about it. If you were coming from another country that would be different, after all, this is the land of the free, right?
