my DH just signed up for social security--he turns 62 this month

we went to a SS seminar a few months ago and was told to sign up the month after you turn 62 then theres a waiting period of a month--yet I saw on the SS website that you can apply when you are 61 and 9 months which he did

so in the case of my DH he should sign up in Dec (month after he turns 62) and get his first check Jan 1

however we went to our guy that helped us get insurance after my DH insurnace ended ( he got 10 yrs free insurance when he retired)

and he said there is no waiting period that you get your check after you sign up and are 62

so which is it when will he get his first check--

Do you need the money? You're leaving a lot on the table. Also if you can wait until age 70 Your benefits increase 8% a year starting from your full retirement date. That equates to around a total of 30% give or take increase.

Signed up in January of the year I turned 62. My birthday is in March. Got my first SS deposit the second half of April.

This is what I did also (March birthday) only I waited till I was 65. I never heard of anyone signing up after their birthday, when they wanted to collect right away.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not consider you eligible for this benefit until the month you will be 62 years old throughout the entire month! Suppose you were born on January 12th. Obviously you are not 62 throughout the entire month, so you must wait until the following month, (February), to receive your first payment. Before you can receive your benefit, you have to file for it, and the very earliest you can file for your benefit is when you are 61 years and 9 months old. So when do you get your money? After you’ve filed your claim and been approved for your benefit, the SSA can start sending you your benefit payment. These payments are sent out the month after you are owed, so each month you are actually being paid for your benefit from the prior month. Typically the SSA sends out payments either the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Wednesday of the month, and the Wednesday you receive your payment will depend on your birthday. Folks born between the 1st and 10th of the month will receive their deposit on the second Wednesday. Folks with birthdays between the 11th and 20th will receive their deposits the 3rd Wednesday, and folks with birthdays between the 21st and the end of the month will have their deposits on the fourth Wednesday. For those just turning 62 and planning to claim, this deposit schedule can cause a small delay for your very first deposit. Assume you turn 62 on June 21st. Your first month of eligibility is in July and since you were born on the 21st you will be paid your July check on the 3rd Wednesday in August. So your first deposit will not arrive for essentially a full 2 months after you actually turn 62.

I turned 62 in April. I filed as early as humanly possible, which was either January or February, can't remember which. Got my first check at the end of June. It takes forever for the money to start, seems like.

I turned 65 in late December. I filed in October. I got my first check the end of February. It was almost 2 full months between my 65th birthday and my first check.
