We are visiting disneyland in January and I am wondering if there is any snow the kids can see within a couple of hours drive from disneyland. The kids have never seen snow. Thanks

I don't know if it snows much, if at all, in Southern California. If you want snow guaranteed you'd probably have to drive to Sacramento and northern California. Sacramento is around a 7 hour drive though. Some locals on here might know of somewhere closer.

The mountains are about a two hour drive away. Places like Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead often have snow at that time. Usually by January the ski resorts are making their own snow. How much natural snow just depends on what kind of winter we are having.

Do you mean besides the Disney trips that snowball out of control? :rotfl:

My sister lives in the San Bernardino County area and there are moutains near her that she drives up to, to see snow. Personally I don't know more than that.

My kids were about 8 years old before the saw snow and that was due to a weird fluke of the weather that caused it to snow lightly in our yard.

There is usually snow in the San Barnardino mountians. I would try Running Springs, Lake Arrowhead, or Big Bear. Those should be around 2 hours away.

Keep in mind that driving + mountains + snow = unhappy drivers. Make sure you have a vehicle that can operate in the snow. Check ahead to see if you are going to need chains, etc.

Yep, the Big Bear area will be your best bet. Just depends on how our "winter" is for how much snow there will be. I live about 45-60 mins away from there, so if you need any directions there, just let me know.

I live in San Jose and in January you can see snow in the hills.. but only a little. I'm like a 6 hr drive out though.

Well, this past January there was snow at the Grapevine....scared me to death thinking I was going to have to drive through that. I'm not sure if that's a yearly occurance though...

When are you going in January? If you are there the first week, you can see it snow falling each night on Main Street USA! ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I live near Disneyland and my family and I always drive up to the Wrightwood area to play in the snow. It is a lot easier to drive to then Big Bear because it lacks the winding roads, and it's a bit closer. It is always extremely crowded up there on a weekend after a snowstorm though, so it is best to go on a weekday if you can. We like to snow play in the area of the Grassy Hollow visitor center, there are some decent hills for sledding. They sell sleds at the harware store in town. There is also a snow tubing park up there and I think you can buy a half day or full day.

I live in the San Bernardino Mountain foothills... I'd recommend NOT Big Bear for snow if you are from Oz- because the roads are windy and it's quite a drive up. Chains are often required. I'd recommend going to Wrightwood instead because it's really easy to get there, and major not windy roads. There is a innertubing snow park (I think) next to Mountain High (where my kids snowboard). You can pretty much count on snow on the ground in January, barring some freak heat wave in the mountains. Both the San Bernardino and San Gabriel ranges have lots of snow in the winter- 13 feet a year in Wrightwood and 10 feet in Big Bear are the averages I just looked up. At any rate the resorts will be making snow. If it is clear, you can even see snow on the San Gabriel Mountains from California Screamin' at DCA!!

To get to Wrightwood from Disneyland:
Take 57 fwy north
210 fwy east
15 fwy north into Cajon Pass
138 hwy west to hwy 2 into Wrightwood

It should only take you about 1 1/2 hours from DL, it's easy. Your kids will love seeing and playing in the snow!

I realise that it's not California snow, but you might be lucky at home to get a good dump somewhere between Bowral and Lithgow over the next few weeks, and if you're really lucky it will be on a weekend.:goodvibes It's an easy daytrip.

Check the bureau's website, and if we have a really good coldsnap be ready!!!

You cannot see any snow from Disneyland or anywhere near Disneyland, but the Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead areas are about 1 hour - 90 minutes from there and they always have snow durign the winter.

It normally does not snow very much here in Calif unltess you live in the mountains, but when we had a real cold snap last year, it snowed in Malibu!

How cold does it get in your area?

to all -

I'm in Lancaster (the High desert in los angeles, it gets cold up here but we never get any percipitation so hence no snow.) a while back I found this link.

If you can't get to the snow bring the snow to you.
