Any sense in booking 4a GTY over 4a room #?

Hey all! I was hoping someone could help me sort this through. We currently have room #8062 on an October sailing of the Wonder. This appears to be just like any other 4a room and we will be very happy with it. There is also no other room number to select. It is this or GTY. I was wondering if there was any sense in giving up the room number for GTY, just in case there was the 1 in a million chance of an upgrade. I am not at all married to my room number and would be happy with any room in the category. Would letting go of it make sense or is there some angle I am not seeing?

ETA: Category 4a on the Wonder is a midship, deluxe family room with verandah on deck 8. All of these rooms appear to be exactly the same. To the best of my knowledge, my current room(8062) has no perks that would make it superior to any other 4a room. I would be happy with any 4a room(unless there is one that is awful that I don't know about). The deck would not change unless I was upgraded. No matter what, 4a would still be midship deck 8.

We did GTY once and wouldn't do it again. We didn't like the cabin we were assigned. It was on deck 10. Right under the pool and very loud.
It was considered an upgrade. Not worth it in my opinion.

While the upgrade possibility exists, not everything is an "upgrade". If you will be happy wherever they put you on the ship, sure, go ahead and change.

But if you like your room and do have places you don't want to be put, stay.

I messed around changing rooms once until the category I wanted was in GTY. Gambled and got stuck with a Deck 5 midship extended balcony that I would never in a million years have wanted (I know, I'm weird as that is heaven for most - but too low, too mid, and I really don't need, want, or use a balcony so it was completely wasted on me). Never again will I gamble with GTY or *GT.

Oh no! I am sorry to hear about your bad experiences. I hope it did not impact the enjoyment of your vacation!

To the best of my knowledge, 4a is the last category before concierge/suite level on the Wonder. It seems like any upgrade from 4a would be great. I just don't know if this logic is sound. At "worst," I would get a random midship deluxe family room, pretty much like what I currently have. At best, I get upgraded to anything higher than 4a.

Can anyone see a downside in this specific scenario?

Booking a GTY will only guarantee that you will have AT LEAST a 4a room. Could be any 4A or above. Most GTY assignments are exactly what's been booked. If you book a specific room number, you'll know what your room is.

No, I don't think there is a downside to your specific scenario as long as you are using DCL's definition of "midship" as some of those 4A's are definitely closer to the aft elevators than the midship ones. So yes you are right the worst case scenario is you end up in any of those 4A rooms (even if they are showing unavailable now) and best case scenario is that there is an opportunity for you to be upgraded. Most likely scenario - you'll be put in the cabin that is showing available currently. (We upgraded a 4A on a transatlantic; the week before it was showing one 4a cabin available. By time we went to upgrade - was adding passenger and wanted to be sure she could go - 4A was gty only. By the next morning our room was assigned - to the cabin that was showing available the week before.)

Thank you! This is very helpful :)
