My husband needs a car for just one day. I have called all over and it seems he needs to have teh car rental compnay pick him up at say 8 am at AKL then go with them 4-6 miles tothe rental car place and fill out the papers and then within twentyfour hours has to drive all the way back to the rental car place and return the car and theywill return him to AKL. I thought it would be much easier if there was a place on property that you could take disney transportation to get the car and then back again. Also, if it is the 24 hour policy if you pick it up at 8 am then you need to get up really early to return it before 8 am what with taking Disney transportation. ugh!!!!!!!!any suggestions. :confused3

If you want an on property car rental your choice is National/Alamo at the Car Car center or the Dolphin.

They have a shuttle and I think that is easier than using Disney transportation. There isn't a Disney bus as far as I know to the Car Care center.

All car rental places rent in 24 hour periods.

We rented a car for a day from the Alamo desk at the Dolphin. Do you have plans for that day? You could make ADRs at one of the resorts for breakfast -- make an excursion out of it! Also, Epcot and MGM are within walking distance. If you plan around it, you may not feel like DH is wasting a huge amount of time.

Also though, I don't think you have to worry too much about the 24 hour thing. There is generally a grace period within which to return the car without penalty. Check the rental agreement when you make a ressie. Besides, as far as I know, the rental desk at the Dolphin doesn't even open until 8, assuming the person minding the desk gets to work on time. The time we went through them, she was running late and then lost her key to get behind the desk. I thought she was going to have to vault it. ;)

Grace period is 59 minutes. If you return it any later than that they start charging you extra hours from the time the car should have been returned.

Thanks, safetymom! You're right, I do recall being told once that at an hour the extra charges kick in. This is what I love about the DIS. All these great people who can fill in the blanks in my head. LOL :flower:

As all rentals are 24 hour, why not have him pick it up the prior evening? He could leave from whatever theme park he is in and go straight to the Dolphin.

Then he can return it the following evening, and he won't have to be concerned with being late for his appt. because of bus timing. If you are staying at AKL, he could then take a leisurely walk down the path to MGM and get a bus direct to AKL, provided he drops it off no later than an hour after MGM closes.

BTW, that 5-6 miles that was mentioned *is* to an on-property WDW location, presumably the one at the Care Care Center near the MK toll plaza. Given the size of WDW, distances of several miles between on-property locations are quite common.
