Hi. I have been following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet since January 1st to manage Crohn's disease. My family is heading to WDW in a few weeks and I'm a little apprehensive about eating. The SCD is gluten free, grain free, lactose free, sugar free. I eat lots of unprocessed meats, fruits, and veggies, but no potatoes/really starchy veggies. I assume I'll eat a lot of burgers without the buns! My daily treat is a smoothie with ice, fruit, and my homemade yogurt. I wouldn't expect them to add my yogurt (which I plan to pack and bring), but is there anyplace that can make just the ice and fruit (and some 100% fruit juice if they have it)? I even thought of bringing my Ninja blender, but you are not allowed to bring any table top appliances to the resorts (except coffee pots).

I'd buy a cheap "bullet" type blender and make it yourself in the room.

Restaurants will not handle food brought in by customers.

Honestly they are probably more worried about fire hazard type items, toaster/toaster ovens, microwaves, foreman grills, etc.

I agree with bookgirl. The types of small appliances that would be an issue would be things that heat up or stay plugged in that might be fire hazards.

You may be able to get a table service restaurant to blend fruit for you that they have in their kitchen. That would mean they would need to already have that fruit as an ingredient for something on the menu.
Because of food safety rules, restaurants are not able to bring any food they did not provide into the kitchen.
So, I would plan to have the treat at a time when you are at the resort and can make it in your room.

I don't have any advice but I was wondering how this diet has been working for you? I have severe CD and I am steroid dependent. I have been thinking about the SCD but it seems like it would be difficult to follow?

To Wishes Count:
Hi! Well, I can say that I've definitely had improvement on the SCD, but I'm not "cured" yet! I think a lot of my issue is stress from work. I teach, so I'm very curious to see how I feel over the summer. The diet took a bit of getting used to, it takes a lot of time in the beginning until you kind of get in a routine with cooking more, and you have to be very patient. I've probably done some stuff wrong, but it is a lot of trial and error. I had a pretty bad setback at around 2 months into the diet, and I got a cold. Then my DH reminded me that the book (Breaking the Vicious Cycle) specifically says that many people have a setback at around 2 months, especially if they have a cold type virus, but usually see steady progress after. I've lost almost 20 pounds, and I wasn't heavy to begin with, but I must say there is a thrill to buying a size 2 or 4!! I feel pretty good and people tell me I look good. My biggest issue is pain, but I'm not usually worried about not making to the bathroom anymore! I had bleeding once during that setback, but no more(on Asocol, I had bleeding regularly!). I've also found out that I'm very sensitive to the almond flour, which really stinks since that is what you can make all kinds of baked goods out of. I started the diet after Asacol, Apriso, Prednisone, and another steroid didn't work. The next step was Humira or Cipro, which I DID NOT want to take. So I was HIGHLY motivated to find something natural.
I actually found out about the diet on the Disboards and had some really nice people here encourage me. Definitely go to SCD lifestyle and get the quick start guide if you decide to do it. You'll get sick of the chicken noodle soup in the first week, but if you are feeling better, you'll be motivated to stick with it. I eat a lot of eggs w/spinach and cheese for breakfast, usually whatever I had for dinner the night before for lunch, and a meat with veggies and applesauce for dinner. I found a sugar free bacon (Gwaltney 1/3 less fat with no sugar added) that is a mainstay now that I don't want to lose any more weight. Banana/fruit smoothies with my yogurt and cider are my main snack right now since I can't really tolerate the almond flour baked goods. The cinnamon cookies made with almond flour did help me continue on when I was feeling like I couldn't eat the same thing anymore---that was before I realized I couldn't eat them!! They were really good! So are the blueberry muffins!!
If you want any more info/share stories etc., feel free to PM me!

At AoA I was able to get a custom smoothie due to allergies. The chef couldn't use the regular base as it had something we were allergic to but there are a couple flavours of the Odwalla juice we can do and since that's one of the ingredients in the regular smoothies he used that as the base. He then tossed in the fruits of our choice (we're also limited as to what fruits we can have due to allergies) and he blended it up in a blender in the kitchen. I don't know if you can have the Odwalla juices or not but I would imagine that a chef could do it with just ice and fruit.

I'd plan for smoothies using my own mini blender but if you'll be hopping to resorts anyway, it's worth asking about. I believe PPs are right that they're talking about cooking appliances that heat up making them fire hazards. A mini blender should be allowed.
