Just wondering if I can take both a Sudafed 12 hour (pseudoephedrine) and a Nyquil at the same time. I need the pseudoepedrine for the decongestant because whatever they are putting in Nyquil now just doesn't do it, but I want to take a Nyquil to help me sleep. (Yes, I have a cold)

Can you call your pharmacist? He/She would be able to give you an answer.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

DH is a Pharmacist.

He said if you want something to make you drowsy take Benadryl, not the Nyquil.

I'm not a pharmacist, nor do I play one on TV. (DD IS a pharmacist, but I think that she is at work.)

Anyway, do you have any Benadryl in the house? If you do, take one or two pills. They will work as well as the Nyquil! :)

Great Minds Think Alike (for anyone else who is :scratchin )

Michelle went to Duquesne here in Pittsburgh and then did a residency in Community Pharmacy at VCU. She works for Walgreens in Richmond, VA now. (And yes, we are very proud. )

I have no benadryl. :(

I do, however, have Sudafed (which I took) and Nyquil....and was hoping I could take them together, but I guess I won't.

And I'm in no mood or condition to go out. Guess I'll live until tomorrow.

What are the ingredients in the Nyquil? I assume Nyquil no longer has Sudafed in it, so I would think it would be OK to take Sudafed and Nyquil together.

Do you have high Blood Pressure? DD said that you probably SHOULDN'T take it, but if you don't have HBP that it probably won't hurt...

Or do you have some kind of alcohol in the house? Nyquil is 10% alcohol and that is what helps you sleep.

Nyquil's active ingredients are Acetaminophen (pain reliever), Dextromethorphan (cough suppresant) and Doxylamine succinate (antihistamine).

Nyquil (or Dayquil) no longer have pseudoephedrine, which is why I got the sudafed the other day, because the antihistamine/decongestant it has now does diddly for me. However, when it did have pseudoephedrine, I don't think it had the antihistamine, so I don't know if those would interact with each other.

Nyquil doesn't have the REAL sudafed in it, but it has another decongestant in it which can raise BP. That is why they caution about people with HBP.

When did you take your sudafed, Kimya? (I am on the phone with DD now)

I'd take the Nyquil if it will help you get some rest.

No HBP here. Mine's actually usually a little under "normal" or "average". I'll probably just go ahead and skip it tonight anyway, since it's now almost 10:30. It would take about an hour to kick in and then I'd need to be able to sleep for 8 hours or I'd be very groggy.

No alcohol either, btw...and if I did, it would probably only take the amount that would equal the size of a nyquil capsule, LOL. I rarely drink, so I can't really handle my alcohol.

I took it around 8pm. Thanks for checking, but you can hang up (if you're only talking on my account). I've decided that it's a little late for me to take the nyquil now as I wouldn't have 8 hours to sleep to let it wear off.

Well I hope you feel better.

I had a sinus infection about a month ago, and I completely agree - the substitue for the Sudafed does not work.
