My husband is a Goldwater republican. I'm a flaming liberal. Makes for some interesting discussions at times. :lmao:

But that's part of the reason we're together. We can both hold our end of a discussion without resorting to fighting (usually), and for the most part respect each other's intellect.

So is there anyone else here in a similar situation? Has it strengthened your relationship, or strained it?

Just curious.

Not my spouse, but quite a few friends and family. I often wonder from some of the political posters if they affiliate in real life with people on the other side, and if so do they treat them with respect. Some people come across as though they couldn't accept anyone in their lives with a different perspective. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with it just being a message board, but I am glad to be able to interact with people in my life who hold different views and we can still have great relationships.

Both of my siblings are Republicans and I get the feeling they think I know nothing about politics..They like to talk down to me when it comes to politics..Part of that is my fault as I want to avoid fights at get- togethers so i try not to talk politics around them... They pobably think I'm really clueless..Little do they know my obsession, lol

if they really think that, then they have not ever been on the dis.

Nope, never. Although my sister knows someone on the Dis from a cruise..
She may now be realizing I take my politics seriously as my mother told her I went to an Obama rally..Here very, very serious boyfriend is a hardcore active Democrat... That must be fun to watch..She actually went to a democratic fundraiser with him

I'm pretty liberal with a fiscal conservative bent, my partner usually couldn't be bothered with politics in general which has driven me crazy in the past. I'd much rather he believe in something, whether conservative or liberal, as long as he believes in something. Thankfully, he does seem to be taking an interest in the coming election. :thumbsup2

As for my friends, most are pretty liberal Democrats who blow my opinions out of the water. They think any day I'm going over to the other side, LOL. Not going to happen. It's just that I used to be a pretty staunch conservative and you can't take every single thing away so easily and quickly. Confounds them at times I guess. And I do have other friends who are darned conservative Republicans and I love them equally. We have great conversations over beers and martinis all the time.

As for family, my parents and older brother and his wife are hardline conservative Republicans. My younger brother is a tried and true liberterian. I'm the liberal Dem in the bunch. We all amuse each other endlessly over dinner hour when we have the rare occasion to be together. Conversation can get heated, but no one gets insulting and we all respect each other's views. Our respective life experiences lead each of us down different political paths.

DH and I are pretty much middle of the road but he leans toward the republican side and me toward the democratic side--we usually cancel each other out in the elections.

My family does the same thing to me - I am considered the flaming liberal fo the family. I had one cousin tell me that when I am older (I am 38) I will understand politics better. To which point I said, "I minored in Political Science in college, interned on Capitol Hill, worked for a Republican strategist, was a lobbyist for 10 years, and got an M.A. in Political Science. What exactly do I need to understand?"

Last year I had a huge blow up at a family function. I usually try to keep my tongue, but my cousin (same as above) was spewing such hatred and racism that I just couldn't stand it anymore.

My husband is Republican and I am Democrat. It really doesn't cause any problems. we disagree on things and we agree on things. DH's job restricts heavily the political activities he can engage in and he is supposed to restrain from showing favoritism towards any candidate, so he has just developed a skill of not getting involved at all (except for voting).

I'm a flaming liberal :teeth: and thankfully my husband (while maybe not as outspoken) is equally liberal. I feel so passionately about some things I honestly think I would have a really hard time having him feel differently. I get that people make it work I just am thankful it's not a battle we have to fight!
