My DD's 2nd grade class just completed the same activity. DD's teacher sent home a list and each child had to bring an unopened package of something. My DD had to bring in a box of Kix cereal. After the snack was made in class each child was given a portion. Each child also had to complete a mini project to show the class made from 100 items. My DD made a cheerio necklace.
At this point I do not worry about germs so much, the kid will be exposed to many unsanitary things.
I remember when I taught High School kid s use to share gum, used gum - take it right out of their mouths and pass it over to their neighbor. NOW THATS GROSS!!
