Does anyone else, booked to cruise in hurricane season, find it hard to fully look forward to your cruise?

We went to Orlando last year (from the UK) but lost a major chunk of our trip stuck in London waiting for Hurricane Frances to run its course. It was still such an amazing trip when we finally got there that we've booked again, this time with a cruise too!

But I'm finding it a little hard to get excited, friends and family keep kindly reminding me what happened last year and pointing out how silly it is to book again in hurricane season.

How do you guys keep your mind off the hurricanes if your cruise/trip is in hurricane season? I feel like theres a great big (windy!) obstacle standing between me and my cruise!

We're off to Fl on Sept 8th, cruising Sept 15th btw......

There is so much truth in your reply and can be applied to our every day lives. Thanks for taking the time to post them.

We always travel to Florida during September/October ('88, '95, '97, '99, '01, 03, '04 - and booked for '06). We had one near-miss by Floyd in '99 (WDW closed down for a day and a half and didn't make it to Castaway Cay due to a full hit by Floyd) and last year we touched down in Orlando right between Jeanne & Ivan, but nevertheless made it to CC three weeks later as DCL managed to have the island operable just in time for our cruise.
Even though there MAY be the odd hurricane, you WILL definitely have lower prices and smaller crowds.

What makes it work for me is as long as I make it on the boat....regardless of where it sails to I am happy.

We went during Charlie last year. Had an itineray change (Nassau instead of Grand Cayman). Had to fly to Florida a day early to make sure we could get in. Anyway - we had some glitches because of the weather, but it was still the best vacation we ever had.

One note - while we were there, there was a RCCL cruise leaving Port Canaveral on Friday, the day Charlie came through. Anyway, in order to miss the storm - the ship had to leave EARLY - with about half the passenger on board - the ship actually left with people in the terminal - not a pretty sight.

DCL was terrific

The only worry I have when we vacatin during hurricane season is not being able to go on the cruise.

I am always pumped to cruise! Even a hurricane does not dampen my spirts too much.

First, I love the quotes, thank you for taking the time to post them. I should have those same quotes handy all the time!

Second, we were cruising during hurricane Hugo. We never felt a drop of rain. The only inconvenience we had was that Carnival ships had to reroute so the ports were crowded. We could literally see 2 other cruise ships following us day inand day out. The lights from the other ship were pretty at night. The ship had a hurricane tracking chart in the main lobby that a lot of people would look at once or twice a day. Other than that, we wouldn't find out how bad the hurricane was until we saw the news at the airport.

I hope you have a great trip!

We've done 5 cruises during September. 4 went off with no problems....and then, in 2004 there was hurricane Jeanne. Our 7 day cruise became a 4 day, and we spent the extra days in a room at WDW paying a small fortune to sit in a room with orders not to open the door.

Oh well.....things happen. And, I'm booked on the Magic again this year....in September....but this time I have insurance!

We were on the 8/28/04 cruise and sailed 10 nights instead of 7, we are now sailing in February and I am kind of sad that we have nothing to look forward to that will keep us at sea longer, so I am hoping for a snow storm in New York when we get back so we will have to stay longer in Fort Lauderdale.

So I guess it is how you look at it, is the glass half full or half empty.

Just enjoy and the odds of bad weather ruining your trip even though it happened to you already is slim.

Enjoy
Joanna

It will be my luck that a hurricane will hit and instead of a 3 day cruise wind up with a longer cruise.

My work does not know the reason I have requested the time off. Oh would I be in trouble if I am not home and back at work after Labor day!

But how could you get off at port and fly home on your own expense when you can stay on the Wonder and enjoy yourself!

When we were "lost at sea" in the hurricane, you were given the choice to debark the Magic in Galveston (at your own expense) and since my kids were going to miss the first 2 days of school, I wanted to do it, but my kids and DH wanted to stay on the Magic. The only regret I have is not enjoying myself, and putting all my energy into worrying. If I could do it again, I would enjoy the moment and not stress over anything.

I really don't think that a hurricane is "something to look forward to"......

You are worried about a cruise....what about peoples lives, homes, jobs..

OK I need to stop here....I have this on my desk at work and it applys here... "LORD, KEEP YOUR ARM AROUND MY SHOULDER AND YOUR HAND
OVER MY MOUTH"....

NOTE to self: Do not cruise with anyone but DCL!!! :cheer2: :Pinkbounc  :cool1:  :wave2:

Well, I'm jealous....those of you that do not live in Hurricane Alley can look forward to a cruise and the "special rates" that are posted that time of year....Go and enjoy. We, recipents, of the hurricanes cannot because travel insurance will not cover you unless your house is damaged, and 2 weeks with no power is apparently, not damage....so, we are stuck, just in case we have to put up shutters, wait in line at Home Depot, buy water. etc, etc, etc, etc,,,,,,,

So, please go, enjoy your cruise and remember we want to be there tooo....

I do not think anyone meant this thread or their post the way you took it. No you are correct a hurricane is not something to look forward to. I live in NC and I know all about it. Plus my DH works in insurance and if the hurricanes are bad like last year he has to leave to help out in the damaged areas. My DH has been sent out of state before to work hurricane duty and we have been hit by a hurricnae here at home. Hurricanes are not something to look forward. DH came home after being gone from Labor day last year to 9 days before Christmas. He did not get to come home once. He had a hard time dealing with people now because of the devastation he dealt with in Florida last year. I hear him say all the time when he deals with a claim that those people need to go to Florida and see what bad is!

We cruised back-to-back-to-back last year and were affected by both Frances and Jeanine. Let's just say we lived in central Florida for many years and have been cruisin in Sept since '98. Last year was frustrating and not a relaxing vacation.

Not stopping us this year though. We leave at 6am Thur. I must say that enthusiasm is dampened. It still won't stop us from the 'adventure' of travel in hurricane season. We just have to book other travel in order to ensure relaxation.

florida-again...since you're flying in way early to enjoy WDW, then the worst thing that can happen is that your flight will be delayed a little but it appears that you will still get there in plenty of time for the cruise.

Just plan a "cruise adventure" and you're set. No matter where you cruise, the crew will go out of their way to help you have fun and the Captain will keep you safe.

I think your friends are just jealous. I would just look forward to a wonderful time and pray for all the folks that might be affected by any hurricanes that do form.

Maybe everyone will be fortunate and all the hurricanes will spin around in circles in the Atlantic! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

kcashner, did you mean frances? we spent four extra nights at cs, over thirty hours lockdown in rooms, during frances. then went through a major hassle to finally get abord in lauderdale, and a few more glitches, it turned into a real nice but too short cruise, with only stop in cozumel. but we took our discount voucher and rebooked for the same weekend departure again this year. it was such a weird weather year last year, this seems to be more like normal, even though more named storms, they have caused about as much hardship as a normal year. and don't flame me for making light of what they've done, i know that like surgery the only minor storm is somebody elses. but if you look realistically at them these have not packed a lot of punch when they came ashore, and right now we'd love for one to come up from south texas and dump some rain on us.

oh well, i've got my fingers crossed for the next couple of months that they just keep blowing out to sea and away from those that have had enough, already.

Last year we canceled are reservations at the Fort Wilderness cabins due to an impending Hurricaine and stayed home. The Disney property went through it just fine- the cabins had rain but were fine. We on the other hand had our vacation week with no electricity at home. Food spoiled, No TV, not much to do. The good side we were uncomfortable but lived through it . Only our fence fell down and some branches-roof leeked, etc. I worried about the Hurricaine and canceled. What I worried about never happened. If we had gone we would have had a week of hot food, hot showers and fun at WDW. ::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo Go on the cruise- buy the insurance, have an adventure with lots of memories. ::MinnieMo
