I am looking at new vacuum cleaners. I would like something really lightweight and hopefully will last more than 2 years. Does the Oreck work well?

I own an oreck XL. I am not a big fan. I have a dog and a cat so fur from shedding is a big clean up issue in my house.

the Oreck has a very narrow pipe and gets clogged very easily, its very inconvenient.

believe it or not, I spent almost 300 on the red Kenmore canister vac, last year, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that thing!

Well I just traded in(not really it is still sitting in a closet) but I went out and bought a dyson dc17 animal instead. We have 2 dogs and the Oreck just wasn't getting the hair up- It is very very lightweight. So that is a plus- but I don't think it works as well as the Dyson. And around here it was a pain in the neck when you forgot you didn't have any bags left- and you would have to order them online(nobody sells them near me)Now I have only had the Dyson since last week so I don't know if I will still love it after the Honeymoon is over. But right now I am

I was really disappointed. It IS lightweight, but that's the only thing I really liked about it. Mine sucked up a rock (youngest DS used to leave them under things), which broke something, and I didn't have it fixed.

We decided to take the opposite approach a few years ago. We buy a fairly inexpensive vacuum and assume it won't last very long. When it gives out in a couple of years we buy another inexpensive vacuum. We've tried the very fancy vacuums and we didn't think their quality was enough better to justify the difference in cost.

I love my Oreck and a I have a Springer Spaniel...read "shedding machine". I have had it for about 8-10 years and have never had a problem.

I do hear that those Dyson "Animal" vacuums are suppposed to be great though. They look heavy though and I have to carry my vacuum up the stairs to do the 2nd floor, and that is one big plus about the Oreck...it's very light.

Really....that stinks. I would like one for upstairs. Our dogs are not allowed up there so the hair is minimal compared to downstairs.

I would not get a Oreck to vacuum up the dog hair because I would have to change the bag almost everytime I vacuumed!:lmao:

I really like mine. I have had two so far but I beat the heck out of them, so I am not complaining. I think that they work best on carpeting, though. I have wood throughout my home now, so I prefer my Rainbow for the wood, and the Oreck for vacuuming the area rug in the dining area. I am not impressed with the little canister vac that comes with the Oreck.

Thanks for all the replies! The Dyson's I've looked at seem quite heavy, so I don't think I want that. We lost our dog last year, so I don't have to worry about pet fur anymore.

I've have thought about get a very inexpensive vacuum, because so far expensive ones don't seem much better.

Nancy, what's the Rainbow? I have wood floor's in most of the house, I have not found anything that works well for that.

Ditto - with the exception that my dog was a cocker spaniel. I think I've had my Oreck at least 10 years.

I bought the Oreck because my previous vacuum did not work well on hard surface floors - the old vacuum just spit the dirt out the back. I've been pleased with the performance of my Oreck. No repairs - just replaced the belt a couple of times.

arminnie, What type of hard floor are you using the Oreck on?

I have one and love it. I will not own another vacuum but Oreck. I have a cat and don't have any problems with the tube clogging.

Another Kenmore user here -- I've had a Rainbow and a Kirby, both of which cost a LOT more than my Kenmore, and both of which I just found to be more of a hassle than anything. We have three bassets and two cats, so the fur flies routinely around our house.

The Kenmore gets rid of the hair, is very easy to manipulate, goes from wood floors to area rugs with the flick of a switch, and wasn't very expensive. When this one dies, I'm getting another one!

I love mine!!! I have had it for 2 years now. We have 2 dogs, one it an Aussie, and he sheds BAD. It did clog up once, but I will admit, it was my fault. I took it to the store and they fixed it for free.

When I lived in CA I had Pergo flooring - a lot of it - in my kitchen, dining room and living room with tile in the bathroom.

In Arkansas I have a lot of tile (12 ") in the hallway, kitchen, den, laundry and 1/2 bath. Plus I have the teeny tiny little tile in the other two bathrooms.

I have a cheap Bissell vacuum in New Orleans - it has worked well but doesn't get used that often. I didn't want to spend that kind of money for a second one. I figured I could take the one from LR (I go by car) if I thought I needed to do an extra thorough clean up once or twice a year. I have hardwood floors and some carpet there.

I like mine. I was tired of buying a new cleaner every couple of years. I think it does a good job on pet hair. I like the smaller, hand held thing that comes with it. I can get ceiling spiders I couldn't before. Very lightweight, and aside from that there is no effort required to "push" it across the floors. It just goes. With a full warranty for 21 years, I feel pretty good that the cost was justified.

I bought this "electricbroom" last year. I have hardwood floors that lead into carpeting and I wanted to have something quick I could pull out that did BOTH. Something lightweight. I paid $100.00 for this piece of CRAP!!

YUP, my dustbuster has more power than this thing. I just threw it out last week! I tried and tried to figure out why this ORECK was such a piece of crap but no clue. If you do NOT thoroughly clean it out after EVERY SINGLE TIME you use it, there is absolutely NO suction at all. BA BYE ORECK. :headache:

My mom owns one. She bought it because all other vauums are too heavy for her. Personally, I don't like it. I don't think it does all that great a job. But it sure is lightweight.

I love my Oreck..had my first one about 12 years..when I brought it in for annual service I decided to trade it in, got 200.00 off my new purchase as well as 21 years of free service....:woohoo:
