Any one file an insurance claim with the Post Office on Ebay auction??

Eventually this buyer will realize he can dispute it through his credit card company, they'll do a chargeback and remove the money from the sellers paypal account.

Stryofoam AND Box for $90.

OH, AND. That makes all the difference then. What the heck??

If you bought insurance, the PO should pay. I had one last year. It took about 4 months and resending the same receipts about 3 times, but the claim was eventually paid.

Sound like the buyer is lucky to get his $90 back.......

It's not my box, and it's not even my bf's box. A guy he knows from the flea market has a bunch of old gaming stuff. Except you can't get ebay prices at the flea market, and he wasn't having much luck selling it online through other outlets. So my bf offered to sell some of the bigger money makers on ebay for him for a cut of the profit, around 10-15%. The guy gets to move out some of his inventory and still make a larger profit than he would have at the flea market.

The only thing I still have in the original box and styrofoam is an Aquarius system. Even still has the K-B Toys price sticker on it. It was made by Mattel, and while probably quite rare, it's quite worthless as the system flopped less than a few months after release. Ohh and a Genesis 2 system in original box and styrofoam, but the system doesn't work any more and the box is a bit beat up. These are both sitting in a storage unit in Florida.

And I never have lived in a basement. The only person I know with a basement lives in Canada, and I haven't seen him for 8 years now. Well I guess for the 2 months I stayed with him, I lived in the basement because that's where the bedrooms were.

Ok I learned something today about the value of old video game packaging!:)

Have you told the flea market guy what happened? I hope he doesn't give you a hard time about the damage (try to say it was your fault, etc.)

Hope it works out with the insurance.

From my own experience, the post office won't pay if they don't believe the item was packaged to their specifications. http://pe.usps.gov/text/dmm300/503.htm#wp1063624 (see 4.2.3).

Good luck with trying to explain to the post office that you were shipping packing material and it arrived damaged. They'll probably want to know how the item arrived, not the packaging; I can hear something along the lines of "Who's on First."

Over the summer, I sold a Cheshire Cat Big Figure to someone at over $200! I was so nervous about it arriving in one undamaged piece, you would have thought I was shippng my own actual cat. Thankfully, it made it unscratched.

Looks to be somewhere between $9.00 and $13.50.

Yes, but what about the actual owner of the box? He's still owed money.

I'm still picturing explaining this to the Post Office.

Right, and ultimately the responsibility falls on the OP, she shipped it. I think there's a little panic in the post, because Mr. Seller is going to want his $ 90, no matter what.

The owner of the box originally, the guy at the flea market, already has his money. He originally only wanted about 40$ for the box, so he's sitting on 50$ more than he was hoping for. If the insurance claim wins, then the 90$ goes back to us, and we figure out how we want to go from there. I'd prefer that it's settled with the buyer keeping the box, as it is 20 years old, and I don't want any further damage to it that would make it hard to resell again. We're hoping we can settle with a 20-30$ credit back to the guy.

.

He paid you $90 for a piece of Styrofoam and he'll be happy with $20 back. So he is willing to pay $70 for broken Styrofoam? This just keeps getting stranger.

I would think if was paying $90 for garbage, I would want it to be "like new" garbage. Not broken down, regular old garbage.

It really is amazing what people pay for just a box/manuals. Sold a PSP box to a girl in Brazil for like 15$ and another 20$ to ship it down there. And most people just toss those things away.

There is no actual paypal dispute yet, he contacted us first. It's just that there's a 45 day limit to open a dispute. He's got a 100% feedback, and purchased other similar items in the past month as well. So I don't believe he's trying to scam us.

If the box and styrofoam together is worth $90, and the box alone is worth $60 (for example) then your insurance should only pay you $30, shouldn't it? Shouldn't you only be reimbursed for the thing that was damaged? Assuming the box is still okay. I guess I don't see why they would pay you $90 which was the value of both items, since you said you are not going to refund the full $90.

(I might be confused ;))

The back of the insurance slip states ...that you have to PROVE the value ...package it properly ....bring all packaging with the box and contents for a damaged item to file a valid claim.

Who wouldn't use the Post Office everytime?

They don't examine the item being shipped ,before you mail it...Thats why they need you to follow the instructions on the back of your insurance slip!

The trouble... is going to be proving that the piece of stryafoam is worth 90.00...Because someone on Ebay paid 90.00 does not prove its value.
I would be surprised if this claim was approved.

I would be too. If it is, pm me your address. I'm going to ship you an old dog toy, insure it for $100, and then file a claim. We can split the $100!! :rotfl::rotfl:

Seriously, this isn't (more than likely) going to get paid by the USPS. Then the responsibility falls on the seller. Just because the money is already in his pocket, doesn't mean he can't file a claim with the cc company. Which he should've done in the first place.

Actually, for the post office, that does prove it's value. Thanks God, how else would I prove the value of the vintage stuff I sell. Surely a piece of piano music that clearly says 5 cents on it, that sells for $45 has to prove it's worth somehow. Or a postcard, that originally sold for a dime, that sells for $25, and then arrives all tore apart. That's why I insure through the post office. Because they accept the value as what is paid on eBay...as long as it's packaged correctly, and it sounds like this was.

If you have the form from eBay showing what it sold for, you too can file a claim. Otherwise, what's the point of insurance at all. You can't just mail an old dog toy..you have to show the worth..which is just what the auction did.
