Any one else had a sick child the day before they fly?

We are due to fly out tomorrow morning but my 16 year old daughter has not been well for the past 2 days - sore throat, aching limbs, high temperature and sickness. Will be phoning my GP this morning. Feel in a real quandry as if we had to fly today, she would not be well enough - however - maybe she might be a bit better tomorrow. Don't know how late I can make a decision. We have very comprehensive insurance so that's not the issue - we are just so looking forward to our holiday!!

Anyone else had this problem or had to cancel a holiday at the last minute due to illness??

:( I don't have any advice, but I would take her to see a doctor today. I really hope she gets better. Lots of pixie dust! :wizard: :wizard:

:sad2: Sounds like a typical summer cold type of thing :cold: Not fair for her or you. Hope you manage to get to see the doctor, hopefully he'll confirm a cold and then you know how to treat.

I went out with a stinking cold a few years ago, felt really miserable not only for myself but for the rest of the family - when we got there, it dried up so quickly, I guess because of the different air conditions. I even psychologically felt better when we arrived at MCO and didn't sneeze too much on the plane

Hope you ALL have a wonderful trip.

Aww! Suzycute thats a shame, dose her up well and keep her warm, fingers and everything else crossed its a 24 hour thing

If she has a virus, the most likely thing given the symptoms, and you decide to go, she is then going to pas it on to everyone on the plane due to the recycled air! It's a tough one I know, I think you really will have to wait and see but if she has aching limbs and a high temp it's more than just a summer cold and she may well take several days to recover, in which case travelling would be silly.

We had to cancel a wonderful holiday to the Far East last year, just one day before travel - yes it was disappointing but the right decision. If you aren't able to travel tomorrow, you may be able to go in a few days.

Hope it works out for and that your daughter improves soon.

Sorry but keeping her warm is the wrong thing to do - if she has a high temp you need to bring it down by COOLING her. - even if she says she feels cold.

Oh dear what a dilema! I hope she feels better soon. Take her to see the GP or if the surgery cant fit her in ask to speak to your emergency doctor surgery. We have a place called Medoc here, not sure what the emergency GP system is like in your area or if its a national thing. I would perhaps speak to NHS direct for an appointment they are really good.

It sounds like a cold, but the temp normally means that she may have a infection and the body is trying to fight it. You may find her throat is the problem of the temp or she may just have a fever. Paracetomol is great for tempertatures, but some people react better to ibruprofen. Try getting your daughter to gargle solveable paracetomol this is what we say to people in hospital to do.

I have travelled several times with a horrid cold and it even got the point of being a ritual. Every holiday I would start off with a cold. As soon as I arrived in Florida it dried up. I was forever sneezing, rudolph look and felt err but as soon as I got on the plane an addrenaline rush came and it started clearing up. The weather being humid is great for colds it released all the catarrh off the lungs and nose. If she really isnt well, then dont travel. The GP would be able to say whats wrong and if she is fit to travel. If she feels she can then a couple of days it will be gone......hopefully..........

Try to keep her cool and regular paractomol to reduce the fever.

Let us know how you got on.

Not had this problem (touch wood) but really feel for you. I hope your daughter recovers today and you manage to get away. :grouphug:

Suzycute, my wife has had exactly the same symptoms, it started thursday last week and was fine by monday evening. She went to the doctor last friday and he basically told her to stop wasting his time! nice. Now i'm no doctor but in our area seems like every other person is going down with it and with in a cpl of days they're fine.
Horrible decision to make, good luck and hope all goes well.

My DD has been unwell for 2 weeks with a high temperature, chesty cough etc... and there is no sign of it letting up. We have been told that there is a weird strain of pneumonia going around this summer that normally only appears in the winter and it is throwing doctors in hospitals for a loop. Hope your daughter has something more minor!!

Our little boy was ill for a couple of days before our March trip - virus, temperature. We were actually at the emergency doctors at 2 in the morning on the day we were due to go.
Our boy is Autistic and while a perfectly, happy lad he cannot talk.

He managed to get a couple of hours sleep and seem to awake feeling better, when we asked him "does he want to go to Disney" he went and got his shoes out of the wardrobe, so we went for it and had a great time - hopefully wont have the same problems in August.
This all despite the doctor advising us not to go.

Hope it works out okay and I sympathise fully.

In 2003, our DS came down with Chickenpox the evening before departure. We took a risk and took the flight and as many others have said before the adrenelin seemed to kick in with him when we arrived and he had what turned out to be a very mild occurence. Water parks were off for the 1st week but we made up for it in the last 3 days of the trip.

Thanks to all of you who have replied -

My DD managed to sleep for about 5 hours this morning after the sickness stopped and woke up feeling a bit better - so the signs are looking more hopeful for tomorrow - she has had 2 slices of toast this evening which we haven't seen again. Our GP was great - very helpful and supportive. I will make a final decision about 6am (we need to leave at 6.30!) but have been greatly encouraged by your replies - they've kept me going today!

I am sorry, I'm not "getting at you" but that but is a dangerous thing to do. The virus can be dangerous to pregnant women. Many people will have caught it from the recycled air on the aircraft which is why the airlines do not allow travel when suffering from infectious diiseases.

Chicken pox is a tough one - your infectious before you even realise you've got it. We went to euro-disney years ago on a coach trip and my daughter had chicken pox but we didn't realise until the spots came out on the second day we were there. There was nothing we could do about it, unfortunately, but we were very worried about the other kids on the coach.

Yes there is nothing you can do if you're unaware, but to knowingly put others at risk, particularly on an aircraft with the recycled air, is unfair.

Very true, but are you still infectious once the spots come out? Must be a tough decision to make. Anyway, lets hope suzycute's daughter is better and they made it on their hols :)

its the couple of weeks before the spots come out , you are infectious, wants the spots appear, the worst is over and your not infectious.

Nonetheless, I agree with gilld.

I believe that with chicken pox you are contagious until the spots dry out and scab over. I would be really upset to be seated next to person with weeping chicken pox spots on a plane!!!!

Of course, if you travel before you know it cannot be helped. But to go when you know you are infectious is selfish.

Back to the OP, I truly hope your DD is well enough to travel. Your are in such a difficult situation. Fingers crossed..........

Just my opinion.....
