Any one else had a sick child the day before they fly?

It's my understanding that with chicken pox, you are only not infectious when the spots have started to scab over - at least that's what schools and nurseries advise before children are allowed back.

A couple of years ago when my daughter was 2, she had what I thought were 2 mosquito bites on her back that I noticed the day we were flying home. It wasn't until we woke up on the plane as were landing that I noticed she was covered in spots - it was by then obviously chicken pox that basically developed during the course of the 8 hour flight.

Most unfortunate, I'm truly sorry if we affected anyone else, but the thing with chicken pox is that you don't know until those dreaded spots appear.

I really hope that no news is good news as far as this thread goes, and suzycute's family have gone on holiday as planned.

I agree if you do know your child has chicken pox dont take them. For men it can be dangerous for those who wish to be future dads. It turns into shingles and it can take 3 weeks to get over.

I hope she went as mentioned no news is good news!

I am under the impression that if you are 'spotty' and the airline suspects that you may have something contagious they will refuse to take you. Dh works at Heathrow and he has seen many families that are not allowed to board flight because they suspect they might be contagious!!!

21 days until we're off to the world!

Chicken Pox doesn't actually become Shingles, the Chicken Pox virus (Varicella) lies dormant once you've had it, often for years and can then manifest itself as Shingles at any time, often after stress or illness. I got Shingles the day after my first daughter was born and although the rash went after a week or so, the severe pain lasted months.

Chicken Pox is one of those viruses dangerous for pregnant women and their unborn babies.

Isnt it once you have had it, the virus lies dormant... but I am sure you can catch it from Chicken pox... it might not come out straight away..

Thats what we were told though as we had to take my son to hospital whislt at WDW as he was covered in a rash.. and they diagnosed (wrongly) chicken pox. He was actually allergic to the sun cream I think!! Anyway..they told us we couldnt go to the parks for fear of passing on the chicken pox or shingles to those who had had chicken pox.

I called the airline when we thought my son had chicken pox and they said we couldnt fly without a doctors certificate to say he was no longer contagious.

As it happens there is no way i would do that anyway. If your child is sick and contagious then you need to stay at home. Sorry if that seems harsh... but its very irresponsible and selfish to fly and risk passing anything on to anyone else.

If you fly and your child has a tummy bug.. that bug could be through the airplane easily during the flight.. and virtually everyone could come down with it.

Its a pain, but if your daughter still has a temperature, and is being sick, you will need to stay at home until she is better.

I totally agree with the sentiments here as it isn't only pregnant women and their unborn babies who are at risk. My DS has a chronic illness and is on steroid treatment. Contact with the chickenpox virus for him could be potentially fatal, if I'm not aware of it. To travel knowing about the condition is really silly.
